Joseph Johns Obituary

JOHNS, SR., Joseph SMOAKS Mr. Joseph Harris Johns, Sr., 79, of Lowcountry Highway in Smoaks, died Saturday evening, May 10, 2008, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Nancy Hoats Johns. Funeral services will be conducted 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, May 13, 2008, from the graveside at Smoaks Baptist Church, 482 Lodge Highway, Smoaks. Mr. Johns was born November 17, 1928, in Colleton County and was a son of the late Lester Odell Johns, Sr. and the late Evelina B. Hardie. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army Air Force; and was a member of Smoaks Baptist Church where he was a former member of the Deacon Board. He was a retired head mechanic from Country Miss in Walterboro and was also a retired head mechanic at Halmode and Alleghany Apparel in Covington, Virginia. He was a master mason, holding his membership at Smoaks Lodge, Ancient Free Masons, where he was a Past Master. Surviving are two sons, Joseph H. Johns, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Smoaks and David L. Johns and his wife Dawn of Smoaks; a daughter, Kelly A. Tan and her husband Alex of Bluffton; and a sister, Geanell Thompson of Beaufort. There are seven grandchildren, Joseph H. Johns, III, James M. Johns, Timothy W. Johns, Christopher D. Johns, Ericka C. Johns, Amy A. Southwick and her husband Steve, and Lindsey B. Allison; and one great grandson, Aidan M. Southwick; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny S. Johns in 1965; a sister, Beulah J. Champan in 1995; and a brother, Lester O. Johns, Jr. in 1998.
