Joseph Hagan Obituary

HAGAN, Joseph Joseph Mark Hagan I, Chef, 52, of Charleston, SC, died, surrounded by family, Friday, October 3, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, SC, of lung and heart complications. Joe was born in Altoona, PA on January 11, 1956. He joined the Navy right out of high school and served during the Vietnam War. He married Norma Olsen on December 11, 1977, they had three children. Joe had a lifetime passion for cooking and baking, skills he initially learned from his beloved grandmother, Bubba. In 2001, he received his Associates Degree in the Culinary Arts from Yorktown Business Institute in York, PA, officially becoming a chef. Joe's most recent job was as a Baker at Newton Farms in Kiawah. In addition to cooking, he was always fascinated by history- especially his Irish roots- and devoted time to researching his family tree. Hiking, fishing, and gardening were his favorite outdoor activities. He loved sharing classic movies, music, and cartoons with his children. Friends and family alike will also remember his fondness for a cold beverage and a good joke. Joe is survived by his parents, Charles Hagan and Margaret Flick; his wife, Norma Hagan; his children, Shannon Burgdorf, Mark Hagan, and Shawn Hagan; his brother, Charles Hagan and his grandchildren, Gavyn Hagan, Isabella Burgdorf, and a grandbaby on the way. A memorial service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Ashley, where he was a member. Please contact the church for the date and time of service, 843-556-4611. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations are made to the American Lung Association. The Hagan family is being served by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, Charleston, SC. To the family:

I'm so deeply sorry about your loss. I just came across the memorial site, and Shannon, you did a wonderful job! I know that when you would all come over on Christmas Eve or whatever event was going on for family functions, Joe always made us feel welcomed and always filled the room with good vibes. Everytime I saw him he was always smiling and you could just tell he had great pride in his family.

Joe was always cracking jokes and making friends. I never spent a lot of time with him but the times I did, he made me laugh and feel like an old pal. He was a kind man with an open heart. I hope his family heals but remembers the great times. I'm sure he has Heaven laughing and eating good :)
