Joseph Greene Obituary

GREENE, Joseph VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - Retired U.S. Navy CWO Joseph A. Greene, 79, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Charleston on Sunday, March 1, 2009. He was a great man, father and friend. Joseph was born on April 4, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY. His strong commitment to his country led him to enlist in the United States Navy in 1948. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and served honorably until his retirement 22 years later. He then worked for the Virginia Housing Authority for 14 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 36 years, Christina Greene. Joe leaves behind his wife, Adele Greene of Charleston, SC; two daughters, Jackie Lewis and husband, Ray, Jennifer Schwartz and husband Rodney, and son James Joseph and beloved granddaughters Jana and Jaime, all of Virginia Beach, VA., as well as stepchildren Jack Zazzaro of Waterbury, CT, Lynn Lewis and husband Jim of Simsbury, CT, Pete Zazzaro and wife Ritu of Windsor, CT and Jane Zazzaro Lassiter and husband Kerry of Charleston, SC. He was cherished by his 8 step-grandchildren, Kate Defresne of Oreland, PA, Adriana and Michael Zazzaro of Waterbury, CT, Jonathan and Sinjin Zazzaro of Windsor, CT, Evelyn Lewis of Simsbury, CT and Lily & Mia Lassiter of Charleston, SC. He leaves behind sister-in-law Anne Greene of Madison, CT, her 6 children and 13 grandchildren. His dearest cousins include Angelo Longo and wife Carol of Huntington, NY, Phil Ribaudo and wife Mae of Brooklyn, NY, Victoria Troy and husband Charlie and Lorraine Longo all of Newport Richey, FL, and Bill and Lucille Hanley of Pawley's Island, SC. Over the years, Joe made many friends and acquaintances while residing in Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, VA, Wethersfield, CT, and Charleston, SC. There will be a small memorial service with full military honors in the near future. At his request, his remains will be scattered at sea by the United States Navy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
