Joe was the best of us. A true friend to all, mentor to youth, and servant leader who set an example we all should follow. He was a devoted son, husband and father and he gave some much of himself to others with joy and laughter.
Having spent many weekends camping with Joe through scouts, I will always remember him happiest when he’s outside lighting the fire or cooking up something exceptionally delicious for the other “Old Goats”. There was never a problem too big for Joe - he always knew how to do everything and even if he didn’t he could fashion up some ingenious solution to get us through the weekend.
The lessons he taught the scouts will be his enduring scouting legacy. His thoughtful advice and joyful encouragement has helped to shape and guide so many young lives.
He will be missed terribly. May he rest in peace and in Glory in Heaven with his Savior.

Joe's life was an example for us all and he will be missed. I am blessed to have know him, and very much appreciate his contributions to MPPC and to the hike ministry in particular. He has gone to be with his Savior on the mountaintop and I look forward to seeing him there someday.

We've been neighbors since Little Joe was born. What a fine young man he grew up to be. Always smiling and so polite. I can just imagine, even though broken hearted, how proud his parents are of his accomplishment. God be with them. Love and Prayers.

I can see see "little Joe´s" face as a child running around church; always as sweet as his Mama and Daddy. When Rick and I came back home, one of the first faces I saw was him handing out bulletins with that big smile in the fellowship hall. He was a shining example of a discipleship and what it means to walk in faith everyday. I know he fought the good fight and is now at rest with our Savior. Our love, our prayers, and our heartfelt sympathy go with all of you. He will be sorely missed.

A servant heart is absolutely the best way to describe Joe . I was so fortunate to work alongside him on the Session at church — and his many contributions there were guided by his faith, his compassion for others and his commitment to his convictions for rightness. An Eagle Scout through and through. He’s left such legacies in so many ways - may his family feel God’s arms wrapped tightly around them.

Coates Family & Friends, please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Joe was an amazing young man and always so polite at the lunch counter at Pitt St Pharmacy back in the day and he grew into an even more amazing and inspiring father, husband, and public servant. I am confident he will continue to serve his Lord and Savior and when the sun shines bright, you know that is Joe smiling down on all of you. God Bless!

Joe was genuinely a kind man. He literally saved me during the 2015 flood by picking me up in a big emergency truck on Ashley Phosphate. Palmetto Commerce was flooded. I will never forget how he helped me that day or how he helped everyone in our department in the EOC. He was always calm and professional and a joy to be around. You will be greatly missed Joe. Condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers.

Long time ago memories of the Coates family and my family and kids, in old Mt. Pleasant, the Academy, Hungry Neck Soccer, sports and just lots of kid activities. My kids, Chuck,Brock and Mandy Sandish grew up in school in Mt Pleasant and lots of friends. I remember this sweet family so well and many thoughts and prayers going out to you. Joe was a wonder young man as were his entire family and all had that infectious smile. So very sorry to hear of his fight and know that he will watch over his sweet Coates family he leaves behind.

Thoughts and Prayers with the entire Coates Family. Little Joe was one of the finest people I have ever known. He "adopted" me as a friend quickly in one of my many family visits to Charleston. When I reflect on times spent in the woods - I will always remember Joe and hid BIG Heart and his kind and caring demeanor putting other people first.

I worked with Joe at the ECC. There was not a day that I would walk by Joe’s office without having a conversation with him. No matter what he was going through, no matter how busy he was, he always asked how me and my daughter were doing. We would share stories of treatment and hope and life in general. My daughter is a brain cancer survivor that also receives treatment at Duke, where Joe was also treated. Joe had an amazing presence about him and never shied away from helping those in need, even throughout his own battle. He was an amazing soul that will be truly missed by those of us that were lucky enough to be a part of his life.
To Joe’s family: You are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope that you can find peace and comfort in knowing that Joe is finally healed and watching over you.

Joe Coates was a great Scoutmaster, a loyal fraternity brother, and a person who reached out to all, especially anyone in need or distress. A stranger was a person he had not yet met. His attitude of quiet confidence and his principled leadership will never be forgotten. Scouting USA, the Kappa Alpha Order, and all in Charleston County are saddened by our loss but we rejoice in his promotion to Glory.

I first met Joe when he taught my CERT class in 2014 and have worked with him in different capacities several times over the years. Joe has always been kind and super helpful. No matter what the ask, Joe was always happy to help out. He inspired others (including me) to want to get involved in emergency management. I will miss seeing his big smile around the hallways and his dedication and service to Charleston County will never be forgotten.
