Joseph Samuel "Jodie" Cantey, Jr. Mt. Pleasant - Joseph Samuel Cantey, Jr., (Jodie), 83, of Mount Pleasant, SC, loving husband of Carolyn Monserrat Cantey, died Thursday, January 18, 2018, at his home with family by his side. Born November 17, 1934, in Charleston, SC, he was the son to the late Joseph Samuel Cantey and Cleo Purse Cantey. A graduate of Bishop England High School, he was active in many sports and club activities. He was elected "Most Athletic" in his senior year. After high school, he was actively involved in coaching and umpiring little league teams and also officiated high school and semi-pro games. In 1952, Mr. Cantey started working for the Post and Courier in the newspaper distribution department, as well as the stereotyping department and mail room. He retired from the newspaper as a pre-print coordinator after a 44 year career. Jodie was a past president of the Bishop England Alumni Association and a member of the SC Football Officials Association and Stella Maris Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband and father and he dearly loved his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Cantey of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sons, Joseph S. Cantey, III of Summerville, David Andrew Cantey and his wife, Kari, of Seattle WA, Michael Francis Cantey of Simpsonville, SC, and Kevin Randall Cantey of Mt. Pleasant SC; daughters, Cathy Cantey of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Mary Cantey Jones and her husband, Mark, of Mt. Pleasant SC; brother, John Robert Cantey and his wife, Rosemary, of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Jessica Marie Cantey, Michael Joseph Cantey, Brittany Dyan Cantey, Connor Douglas Jones, Preston Samuel Jones, Olivia Frances Cantey, Samuel Finn Cantey, and Liam Joseph Cantey. The family will receive friends, at McALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT. PLEASANT, on Sunday, January 21st, 2018, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial, will be held Monday, January 22, 2018, at 10:00 AM at Christ Our King Church, 1122 Russell Dr., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Roper Saint Francis Hospice www.rsfhfoundation.org/donate or Stella Maris Church, Sullivan's Island, 1204 Middle St., Sullivan's Island, SC 29482.
