I´m 19 years late. Just put my 6 year old to bed. We stayed up past his bed time and played a game - "questions." He asked me why I liked coffee. I asked what he´s most excited about for 1st grade. It reminded me of sleepovers with my best friend in 4th-6th grade. Staying up late and talking about stuff... all kinds. Intimate, harmless, but profound. Jonathan and I were best friends. I moved away. I didn´t know. God bless, my heart breaks.

I would have signed this earlier, but I didn't know it existed until now. It's been almost 5 months since we lost Jonathan, but I still think about him quite often. I was Jonathan's RA at Newman. I didn't know him as well as all of you did, but it gives me great comfort to read all the nice things you said. All of you will continue to be in my prayers.

I was thinking a lot about Jonathan today, so I googled his name and found this site, and I'm really glad I did. Jonathan and I became fast friends at Newman Hall last school year when I still lived there. We had seen eachother around but we never really talked until a lttle bit after last spring break. He was in the cafeteria having cereal, and I was going in to get coffee. I walked past him and looked down at what he was studying and it looked horrendous, a bunch of graphs and stats. I said, "wow, that looks like a whole lotta fun," and he replied with that infectious smile of his, looked at my text book, and said, "yea well, organic chemistry sounds alot better." I got my coffee, and sat down across from him, and that was how we first met, and that night we talked for hours. After that, for the rest of the semester, our talks in the Newman Caff kept me sane. Jonathan was amazing. I really really cared about him alot, and I'll never forget about him because I'd never want to. Michelle, James, and Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael, it was a pleasure meeting you at the memorial service; I think of you and Jonathan often. You are all in my prayers.

I dont even know where to begin. I am one of the only people that really stayed in touch with Jonathan after high school, which makes this especially hard for me. I am truly blessed to have met him, to have become his friend and mostly that we became so close. I just feel so sorry for the people that will never get to meet the smartest, most gorgeous, generous, person I will ever know. I just recently spent a lot (look Jonathan, I spelled a lot correctly. You always gave me a hard time if I ever spelled anything wrong online) of time with him over Christmas break, as the Carmichael family knows and I just miss him SO much. I dont know what I'm going to do without him. He always tried to make me feel better when I was down and always cared about how I was doing. He always brightened my day and was one of the funniest people I knew. We could go back and forth making fun of eachother for days. To Jonathan, I love you and I miss you. And to the Carmichael family, I love you very much and especially to Michelle and James. I think about you everyday and hope that you are doing ok.

Jonathan was hands down one of the nicest guys I have ever known and will ever know. He always knew what to say to make anyone feel better. People as wonderful as Jonathan are few and far between. He has brightened the lives of everyone that had the privilege of knowing him, and he will live on in our hearts forever.

I could write on here for hours about Jonathan's kindness, his intelligence, and the overall joy it was to be in his presence, but I will instead share how he changed, if not saved, my own life. When I moved to Edwardsville from Wisconsin, I considered myself a social outcast with severe self esteem issues until I met Jonathan. Befriending me no-questions-asked, Jonathan was the sole influence who taught me to live without fear of social norms; to live my life the way I wanted and not worry what people thought. Without Jonathan's positive reinforcement and unconditional friendship, I cannot fathom what shape my life would be in today. It would be an understatement to say that Jonathan was the best friend I ever had. I am deeply saddened that we grew apart and was not there for him when he truly needed help. You were, are, and forever will be missed.
Your Friend,

When someone you love dies, sometimes all you want to do is crawl in a corner and cry. I have never been good with death, and I never know the right things to say to make the day go by smoother. But to all those who ever got the chance to meet Jonathan Carmichael, whether it be catching his eye on the street, or having a long personal talk, we have been blessed. He was an inspiration to be around, and even though I wasn't the closest to him, I caught a glimpse of greatness in him. He will be greatly missed and most certainly not forgotten.

To the Carmichael/Ruiz Families,
My best memories from the Wolf Branch days are of one play in particular that Jon and I were in.. we were generals! I remember having a big crush on him because he had such a bright smile. He helped me to get rid of my nerves that last important night. Thought I haven't seen him in a while, those memories serve me today as the best and most memorable days of my childhood. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, along with Eric Stamm and Josh Cook.
Jon, rest in peace... I wish I had gotten to see you one more time.
