John Whetsell Obituary

John Cohen "Johnny" Whetsell, 85, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025, in a local hospice facility on what would have been his 66th wedding anniversary. A retired Supervisory Missile Technician for POMFLANT, John was an Army Veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of North Charleston High School and Palmer College and was of the Episcopal faith. He was born April 23, 1940, in Charleston, SC, a son of John Dennis Whetsell and Geraldine Sanders Whetsell. John was a dedicated volunteer Fire Chief for many years at the Lake Moultrie Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, boating, skiing, and spending time on Lake Moultrie. He found pleasure in collecting guns and knives and always looked forward to dining at the Watermark Restaurant with family and friends. An avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, he loved his family, especially watching his grandchildren play softball and baseball. John is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Whetsell Gaskins and her husband Daryl of Salters, and Christy Whetsell Winningham and her husband Jeff of Bonneau; his son, Michael David Whetsell of Bonneau Beach; his sister, Madeline Jones of Moncks Corner; seven grandchildren, Branden Michael Whetsell, Molly Louise Shuler and her wife Fran, Daryl Wayne Gaskins, Jr, Emma Lea Gaskins, Tally Dane Strock, Josh Winningham and his wife Haley, and Jenna Poston and her husband Matthew; and three great-grandchildren, Camila Contreras, Leyla Benenhaley, and Drake Whetsell. He is also survived by his beloved cat, Maggie. John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sally Downs Whetsell and his son, Dennis L. Whetsell. All services will be private according to Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner, SC. The family suggests memorials be made in memory of Johnny to Agape Hospice Charleston, 3955 Fabre Place, Suite 202, North Charleston, SC 29405 or to the American Cancer Society, ATTN: RFL of Moncks Corner, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406 To send a flower arrangement in memory of John Cohen Whetsell, please click here to visit our sympathy store.

So sorry to hear this. Johnny was my friend from the early 50's. He and Sally were such a sweet couple. I am sure he is dancing with his Sally in Heaven.
