John von Lehe Obituary

Dr. John von Lehe MT. PLEASANT - Dr. John von Lehe lost his heroic battle with cancer early Monday morning. He died peacefully with his loving wife at his side at the Hospice of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant. He was 48. Dr. von Lehe was born in Walterboro June 27, 1961. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. A. Charles von Lehe (Catherine). He graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, in 1984 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and Computer Science. Dr. von Lehe attended The Citadel on a wrestling scholarship. As a cadet, Dr. von Lehe received the Dean's List award, the Distinguished Military Student award, the Distinguished Military Graduate Award, was a cadet officer, and was co-captain of the wrestling team his senior year. After graduation, he served on active duty for three years in the United States Army in Germany. At the time of his passing, he was a Lt. Colonel in the SC Army National Guard through which he was deployed as a medical officer to Iraq in 2004 and to Afghanistan in 2008. In 1989, Dr. von Lehe graduated from The University of South Carolina School of Law with a Juris Doctor Degree. He helped to establish, and eventually served as vice-chairman, of the school's Pro Bono Board. He had a private law practice in Mt Pleasant from 1990 until 1996. While he was achieving success with his law practice, Dr. von Lehe yearned to practice medicine like his late father and grandfather. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2000 with his Doctor of Medicine Degree and completed his family medicine residency in 2002. Dr. von Lehe practiced medicine at East Cooper Family practice since 2002, and in 2009, became part of the Roper St. Francis Physicians Partner Network, where he served on the Networks council. He was the attending physician and medical director for Mt. Pleasant Manor, Grace Hall Assisted Living Facility, the Palms, and Carolina Hospice Care. Dr. von Lehe was on the medical staff at both Roper St. Francis Healthcare and East Cooper Regional Medical Center, the latter at which he had served as Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee. He was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, and coached soccer for the youth of Mt. Pleasant. John was a wonderful husband, father, and community leader. Dr. von Lehe touched so many lives in very positive ways. He was proud to serve his country in his military role. Often described as a "man's man,", he loved life and the Lowcountry and was an avid outdoorsman. But to Dr. von Lehe, the most important thing in life was his family. He was deeply devoted to his wife of 25 years and their four children. He will be missed by so very many. In addition to his wife Andrea Howard von Lehe, and his mother Catherine von Lehe, he leaves behind his children, Christopher 19, Charlie 18, Reagin 8, and Kinsey 6. There are three brothers, Quinlan von Lehe, and his wife Joan, of Cullman, AL; Charles von Lehe, and wife Tammy, of Walterboro; and Michael von Lehe, and wife Lin, of Gainesville, FL. Dr. von Lehe has a sister-in-law Terry Howard Johnston, and her husband, Col. Nick Johnston, of Hickman Air Force Base, HI. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at Summerall Chapel on the campus of The Citadel. The final Commendation and Farewell will be held that afternoon at 3:00 in the Live Oak Cemetery in Walterboro. A Vigil for the Deceased, with reception at the church, will also be held at Summerall Chapel Wednesday evening from 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the John von Lehe Memorial Trust, 1655 B. Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407 or to the Hospice Center of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd. Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. I just found out about it a couple of days ago. My world is still rocked. John and I lived in the same neighborhood. I knew John through High School and up until he moved to South Carolina. I was at the wedding. He was one of my best friends. The things I read about John in the intro are amazing. He accomplished so much in so little time. So smart. I am proud to have been his friend. John had been to my house many times. One day he came over with his electric guitar and amp. He played Purple Haze and sang while I played the drums. I'll never forget that and I will never forget John Von Lehe.
I loved him dearly.

Andrea,
I just found out about John today from Phyllis and Adrienne. I saw John in June as a patient. He was a wonderful doctor and always listened and cared about you. When I ask about you he always lit up. My heart aches for you and your children. Please let me know if I can do anything. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dearest Andrea,
Words of thanksgiving of having known John ("Dr. John von") are redundant and inadequate. We all who knew him echo the same experiences in having known and loved him. He was indeed consistent with all who knew him. He was sincere in the truest definition of the word. It was an honor to have worked with him and to have been his patient. His compassion for his practice, nursing home, and hospice patients was a comfort to all. And when you were by his side, his face just shined with love and admiration. May you, your children, and the rest of his family find comfort in the honoring words of those who loved and respected him. May God give you peace.

To Mrs. Von Lehe, children and family,

My heartfelt condolences go out to you all at this difficult time. I had the privilege of calling on Dr. Von Lehe for Novartis pharmaceuticals. He was so thoughtful, kind, and patient...it was obvious to all that he had a generous love of life and was truly dedicated to improving the quality of lives of the people around him. He often made comments about his family and beamed with pride when he spoke of you all. In the days to come, may you be comforted by the many lives that he touched....not many people can truly say they made a difference....Dr. Von Lehe made a difference for all those he touched. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

May God Bless you,

Andrea and family:
Andrea you were John's soulmate. Christopher, Charlie, Reagin and Kinsey, your Dad loved you more than life. My parents thought of John not only as a nephew, but as a son. We the Wilson girls thought of John as our cousin but also as the brother we never had. We shared many memorable moments together. John was an amazing young man.... a dedicated husband, father, friend and Doctor. His eyes always sparkled. His smile would brighten your day. His legacy lives on in you Andrea, Christopher, Charlie, Reagin and Kinsey. He will always be remembered for his kind soul, his kindred spirit and his love of life. We must remember to celebrate his life. He will be forever missed, but forever remembered.

John was a phenomenal person, and had a huge impact on my life. We served as Lieutenants together in Germany in the mid-80s, and always talked about going to law school.

When I was serving in the 82d Airborne Division, John had started law school. He urged me to go to law school at Carolina, and really paved the way for me there.

John was always cheerful, upbeat, and frankly, silly. He was one of the greatest guys I've ever known. He was a superb Army officer -- tough without being crude, wise without being a know-it-all, and above all, a Soldier's Soldier -- caring for everyone.

John absolutely loved his family, and was man enough to not be ashamed to say so.

To me, John epitomized the best of America -- a dedicated servant to our Country and its People, an intellectually inquisitive man, and a true gentleman.

I can think of many, many great times together. I am rich beyond imagining for having known him, and poor beyond words for his loss.

Andrea and children,

We are very sad to learn of John's passing. My son Sean has fond memories of spending many a night at your house and always spoke highly of Charlie's dad. I met John during football season while coaching Charlie a few years ago. From the sidelines, I could tell John was very enthusiastic, positive and a self motivating guy who wants to see his children excel and be happy at whatever they do: what a great way to move through life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My family has known John von Lehe since he was a middle school kid with a mop of curly hair. John was in and out of my home with my son, Steve Arrants and neighbor friends Rick Dale and Randy Chambers.
In high school, I worried about John being too thin as he was determined to keep his weight down to make the weight division in competition. I, jokingly, told him I was going to force feed him if he didn't plump up some. He'd smile that sweet smile and reassure me that he was fine and that as soon as wrestling season was over he would put a few pounds on. He did well in high school wrestling and made it to the state finals as I recall.
When John and his friends graduated from Gainesville High School they all went separate ways....different colleges, but always stayed in touch. There were great reunions when John came home and it was wonderful to see that great grin and catch up on the latest in his life.
When John married the lovely Andrea and went on to become an attorney and then a MD and a Dad to four great kids, I still kept up with him thru my son, Steve. His tours overseas were worrisome to all and we feared for his safety after hearing some of his stories about his experiences. We were all relieved when he said he wouldn't have to return and would be able to remain stateside with his family.
John was a loyal friend, husband, father, son, and brother. You could always count on John's word....and his grin could sway a mountain. John loved and was loved by all. We wish you peace with the angels, John...for you have to be one of them.
Our thoughts and best wishes are with you ,Andrea ,and your children and the rest of the family. Our family was honored to have know and loved
John von Lehe.

To the von Lehe family,

The world has truly lost a great man. I read his obituary and I am struck by what a full life he led in just 48 short years. I am away from Charleston...this is really hard to believe..I am so sorry for your loss. John was a fantastic guy! He and I were in medical school together, and his upbeat attitude was the best. Mrs.Von Lehe,
While Dr.Von Lehe completed his residency at Trident, he became my Mom & Dad's doctor. Both of them cosidered him as one of the family. Dr. Von Lehe made house calls when my dad was too fragile to get to the office. He always made my mom feel even more beautiful than she was with his teasing. A visit from Dr. Von Lehe was a bright spot in their day. My siblings and I mourn with you. We pray that you will find peace in our Lord's mercy and love.

November 10, 2009

Andrea,
I am so very sorry. I have so many memories of times spent with you and John. It seems like it was yesterday that we were all at The Citadel together. These 25 years have gone by too quickly. It is not fair that such a loving couple and family should be without their mate and father. You and John are both awesome people and dear friends. Even though we all have traveled down the separate roads our lives have taken us, I feel that we all "grew up" together during a very special time of our lives. John has always been a great joy to be around. His great sense of humor always lead to a lot of laughs and funny stories either being made or told. His accomplishments in his professional life are a great inspiration and impressive example to anyone who knows or hears story. I will always love you, John, and your family.

My personal connection with John was when my wife, Helen Martin Padgett, was a patient of his. He was kind enough that he called me one evening and told me that Helen had onty a short time to live. I will aways remember how kind he was. My family connection with him was this. My Grandmother lived across the street from his Grandfather, Chris vonLehe. For many years he had the highest grades of anyone graduating from MUSC, maybe until now. Chris brought me into this world over ninety years ago. I had a brother, vonLehe Crosby who was named after Dr. Chris. I went to school with Dr. Charles vonLehe, Johns Father.

Bless you and your Children, Andrea, and may our Father in Heaven help you with your Grief.

John Von Lehe was one of the most principled human beings I have had the good fortune to know. I met him when he was doing his residency at Trident and decided then that he would be my famiy doctor..and so it was. He served his country with devotion and pride and showed an enormous amount of common sense in the face of adversity. I will always be grateful that he was in my life. May his family be at peace knowing he lived his life with exemplary grace and strength.
As an RN and patient, I will remain humbled by his works.

Andrea,
We are so saddened to hear of your loss. While we did not know John personally, we did know him through you, Christopher and Charlie-such fine young men. We remember them as small boys when Rhonda and Jeff would babysit. Know that you and the children are in our thoughts and prayers. Thinking of you all.

My family is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. von Lehe. He was our family doctor for almost 6 years. We all loved him and will miss him terribly. May God hold tight to you all as you grieve his passing.

There is one thing for sure as John pushes forward in his travel, he added to this world, he did not take away from it. His addition to this world is "He Will Live In Each Of Our Hearts". My biggest sorrow is, I only wish I had spent more time with He. Sincerely, Mark Judy

It was an honor and priveledge to work with Dr. VonLehe at Grace Hall and Hospice. He had a wonderful bedside manner and always treated everyone with such kindness and respect. He gave so much of himself in all he did. His time was too short but he accomplished so much. He has touched many and given us all a tremendous example to follow. I know I am a better person for having known him and worked with him. He loved his family and was so proud of them. He always had wonderul stories to share and had a twinkle in his eye when he talked about them
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Thank you for sharing him with so many people. May the love you shared bring you comfort.

Andrea and family;
I am so incredibly sorry for the loss of your husband, father, son. He was one of the most incredible people that I had ever met in my life. His patience, knowledge and compassion were inspiring. He led by example, sharing his strength of faith and love of family by his actions and with his interactions with people. He helped me to become a better clinician, a better person...I wish for you peace and comfort. I pray that the love of God, the love of your family and friends that surrounds you now will continue to sustain you...What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why he left this earth so soon, or why he left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that he died, but that he lived. And that his life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, God Bless all of you, and God Bless John, as he now is an Angel watching over you...

How very sad we are to loose our family doctor and friend. I just saw John a few weeks back, we talked about our children. He mentioned that he had arrived home recently to find his son cutting the grass. We have great kids, he responded. I wanted you to know this, what a wonderful person to have had in our lives. Our prayers are with you all.

Mrs.Vonlehe, my name is Mindy and I have worked with east cooper family practice since 2002 and I have to say I really cared for Dr.Vonlehe. He was a great man with a great since of humor. He always made us laugh. The funniest conversation we ever had was about those cowboy boots he use to wear, the ones with some kind of design on the tip of them.He will be greatly missed and I am so sorry for you and the kids.
