John Shea Obituary

John F. "Jack" Shea PITTSFIELD, MA - John F. "Jack" Shea, Esq., 92, formerly of Pittsfield, died peacefully on April 29, 2013, in Orlando, Fla. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 11, 1920, the son of John M. Shea and Anne McCarron Shea, he attended public schools in Dalton and graduated from Dalton High School. He graduated from Holy Cross College, Worcester, with a B.A. in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy Air Corps immediately following his graduation. While waiting to be called to active duty Jack began his law studies at Boston University Law School. After a year of law school, he was assigned by the Navy to Williams College for training; soon thereafter, he received his wings and was commissioned at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. While overseas in the Pacific during World War II, he served with Air Group 84 and piloted the Navy's top fighter planes, the Hellcat and Corsair. His squadron was attached to aircraft carriers, Bunker Hill and Ranger, which saw considerable action off the southern coast of Japan. After the war, he finished his studies at Boston University Law School where he received his J.D. After law school, Jack returned to Pittsfield and joined his father's law practice. His brother-in-law, F. Richard Drennan, joined shortly thereafter to form the Shea, Drennan, Shea Law Firm. His nephew, Richard X. Drennan, later joined the firm. He treasured politics and was elected as a Berkshire County Commissioner, an office he held for over 20 years. He was close friends with President John F. Kennedy and coordinated Kennedy's senatorial campaign in Western Massachusetts. After 40 years of practicing law, he retired and moved to Bonita Springs, Fla., with his wife, Eileen Sprague Shea, where he was a member of the Spanish Wells Golf Course. He moved to Orlando in 2011, to be closer to his son, Bob. Jack valued sports and he played football and baseball during his school years. He was an avid golfer who was a longtime member at the Berkshire Hills Country Club. He served as president of the Monday Morning Quarterback's Club and he was known as a pretty fair hockey referee. He loved to sail his O'Day sailboat on Pontoosuc Lake while listening to Red Sox games. He encouraged and assisted his children to participate in sports including swimming, skiing, golf, football, and hockey. Like many in these parts, he rooted for all the Boston pro sports teams. He followed closely the Holy Cross football and hockey programs, as well as Notre Dame football. He is survived by his children, Dr. Ann Shea Demick, DDS (husband, Dr. Dave Demick; grandkids, John and Carol), Jean Shea Budrow, Esq., and Bob Shea, Esq.; also, his sister, Marion Shea Drennan, Richard X. Drennan, Esq., Dr. Peter Drennan (Michelle), Mary Drennan Hanlon (Bill); Paul Drennan and John Drennan, Esq. of Mt. Pleasant, SC; also, his stepdaughter, Lisa Sprague. He was predeceased by a son, John F. Jr., by his former wife, Eleanor Roe Shea, and by his second wife, Eileen Sprague Shea. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Jean, Ann, Bob, I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your father. As you know John was a very close friend, our attorney, and confidant to my family during the Pittsfield days. Everyone loved John. He lived a full, happy life. You should be very proud of him. God bless. Paul Sweeney, Bethesda, Md.

For many years, John Shea and his family lived in a house on Pontoosuc Lake. I live in that house today, along with my wife and son. Every summer, a neighbor, friend or acquaintance of the Shea family has stopped to share a story (or two or three!) about Jack. The love, laughter and joy that the stories invariably feature are an indication of the lives that Jack touched. Thanks to him and his family for making our corner of the world a little bit brighter.

John was one of the good guys, after knowing him for many years,as a retired court employee and socially. He was always cordial and friendly to all people. Will miss his humor and advice. Rest in peace, John.

There was never a greater nor truer friend to my parents than John Shea. Our family holds so many wonderfully fun memories of him,....in our home on Harvard St., at the Shea summer cottage on the lake, the annual trips to Pinehurst with Bill Garrity, Art Bolby, and John Retallick ( and all the legendary tales of their antics there!),the 4th of July fireworks and cherry bomb incidents, evenings at "The Springs" restaurant, golf outings at The Berkshire Hill C.C., and on and on.......As a loyal friend to my parents,Betty and Tom Conry,..John extended that friendship to me and my three brothers, Tom, Jim, and Brian. We will always remember his larger than life Irish exuberance! He was loved by us all!
Jean, my brother Brian treasured your friendship.
Speaking for all our family, I send our most sincere condolences to all of you, Jean, Ann, and Bob,.....your father was one-of-a-kind, and much loved.

My uncle John was a wonderful role model growing up in Pittsfield and a True American Hero. I was blessed to have such a "cool" Uncle. He is one of the main reasons I pursued law. He was a great man.
