John Scarborough Obituary

John D. Scarborough, III MONCKS CORNER - John Dearing Scarborough, III, 76, of Moncks Corner, SC, former Director of Economic Development for Berkeley County, died January 1st after a long battle with Parkinson's. A graveside memorial will take place on Sunday, January 7th at the Thornley Family Cemetery (684 Broughton Road, Moncks Corner) directed by Dial-Murray Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:30 pm and the service will begin at 2:30 pm. Mr. Scarborough was born February 12, 1947 in Moncks Corner, SC, the oldest son of Louise Thornley Scarborough and John Dearing ("Jack") Scarborough, Jr. John was an avid outdoorsman, an amateur magician, a volunteer coach for all of his children's youth teams, a Rotarian, an active member of Ducks Unlimited, and a reliable member of the Buck Hall Hunt Club. He was a former banker with C&S Bank, a broker with Edward D Jones, and worked early in his career at Jack Krawcheck's, The Berkeley, and Baron's Department Store. John loved Berkeley County and was a tireless ambassador for his hometown.He was instrumental in helping attract VOLVO to their current manufacturing facility, and he worked for decades behind the scenes with the Charleston Regional Development Alliance to secure quality employment for thousands of tri-county residents.He attended Berkeley County public schools and graduated from The Baptist College at Charleston. John grew up playing in the fields, rivers, and lakes of Moncks Corner, discovering the best places to scout whitetail, turkey, bass, and bream. While his love for Berkeley County ran deep, he also loved traveling. John's genuine curiosity endeared him to people of many cultures from all over the world. Surviving are: daughter, Liz Rennie (K.C.) of North Charleston; son, Daniel Scarborough (Niki) of Lake City; daughter, Kristin Ansley (Connor) of Mount Pleasant; brother, Norman M. Scarborough and his wife, Cindy, of Clinton, SC; former wife and longtime friend, Lynda Scarborough; and five grandchildren, Callum, Ruthie, Braxton, Brayden, and Bowden. Memorials may be made to Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461 or the Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
