John Riley Obituary

John Allen Riley CHARLESTON, SC - Entered into eternal rest on August 7, 2010, Dr. John Allen Riley, widower of Georgette Xepapas Riley. Residence, Charleston, South Carolina. Funeral services will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. Dr. Riley was born on January 25, 1924, in Bostic, North Carolina. He was reared in Orangeburg and Columbia and was educated in Columbia public schools. Mr. Riley joined the United States Army at age 16 in Ft. Bragg, NC. He served with the 4th Field Mtn Artillery and 97th Mtn Artillery in the Asiatic Theater. He served on New Caledonia, Guadacanal and other islands from April 1942 until April 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1945 at Ft. Bragg, NC. Dr. Riley received his BA and MA degrees in English from the University of South Carolina and continued his education, completing his PHD degree from University of Georgia in 1967. During this time he married his wife Georgette in 1960. They remained married until her death in 2001. His teaching career included St. George, Riverside Military Academy, Georgia, Blaney High School, Beaufort, SC, Virginia Tech, The University of Georgia, and The Citadel. He retired from The Citadel in 1987. Surviving are his brother, Guy Eargle of Newberry, SC; several nieces and nephews. John was a great person, I have known his wife and him for many years. He was only the best person you would ever want to meet. His soft spoken voice full of wisdom only made you assured that he was a true friend to all, that had the chance to know him
