John Rhoden Obituary

John Benjamin Rhoden, Sr. WALTERBORO - Mr. John Benjamin "J.B." Rhoden, Sr., 93, of Hayne Street in Walterboro died Monday, November 12th, 2012 in the Colleton Medical Center after a brief illness. Born Feb. 27th, 1919 in Colleton County, he was the son of the late John Benjamin Gordon Rhoden and Margaret Irene Benton Rhoden. He first served his country in the United States Army in the Panama Canal. During World War II he once again served his country in the United States Marine Corp in China, Guam, Okinawa, and Guadalcanal. He retired from Paris Island after 40 years as an electrical lineman, but had also worked for Palmetto Electric CoOp and Palmetto Rural Telephone Company. He was a member of Doctor's Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Rhoden was a familiar sight in Walterboro as he could always be recognized wearing his "Red Marine Corp Cover" and riding his John Deere tractor on the family farm in the Stokes community. He was married to the late Clara Kinard Rhoden, the light and love of his life, for 71 years. He is survived by two sons: John B. Rhoden, Jr. and wife Helen of Hampton and Gordon L. Rhoden, Sr. and wife Brenda of Varnville. There are 4 grandchildren: Lee Rhoden, Lori Rhoden Ewing, Ryan Rhoden Brunson and Andrea Rhoden Harrison as well as 10 great-grandchildren: Gretchen, Cress and Emmie Rhoden, Grant Ewing, Olivia, Emma Clare, and Sims Brunson, Abbey and Parker Harrison and Gunner Rhoden. He was predeceased by one brother, Harold Rhoden and his grandson, Stephen Rhoden. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, November 16th, 2012 in the Doctor's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.
