John Quigley Obituary
QUIGLEY, Jack John Jack Leslie Quigley, Jr., 64, husband of Barbara R. Cole of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died August 25, 2006 of complications of a stroke. Jack was born 11/10/41 in Rochester, NY, son of the late J. Leslie Quigley and Mary Thomas Quigley. He received a Bachelor's degree in philosophy from Amherst College, Amherst, MA, a Bachelor's of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, a Master's of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from Eden Theological Seminary, Webster Groves, MO. He became a quadriplegic at age 22 and spent the rest of his life inspiring all he met by his determination, success and grace in surmounting all obstacles that he encountered. He devoted his professional life to assisting at-risk segments of society in St. Louis, Georgia, and California, developing programs and establishing agencies for affordable housing, better working conditions and encouraging higher education. In addition, he served as Director of Field Education for Eden Theological Seminary and practiced pastoral counseling for many years. A host of awards and acknowledgements, including those from Places for People, St. Louis, the Class of 1963 of Amherst College, and Better Family Life, St. Louis, demonstrate, in part, the wealth of respect and admiration from the people he touched. Retirement to South Carolina brought membership at the Circular Congregational Church in Charleston where he participated in dismantling racism initiatives and the growing efforts of the Mission Fund to develop programs for societal connections. In addition, he helped to found the Rupununi Learners' Foundation to establish libraries for the Amerindians of Guyana. He reveled in the southern sun, the joy, freedom and friends of the community of I'on whose history he learned and shared on many occasions. Surviving are his wife, Barbara R. Cole of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughter, Sara D. Quigley and husband Chad Goede of St. Louis, MO; son, David T. Quigley of St. Louis, a sister, Marijean Quigley-Young and her husband, Louis E.
