Lois and Ami--I was so sad to read of John's ( Colonel's ) death. In all my years in education, I've never met anyone like Colonel P. He was an exceptional teacher and a wonderful person. John never failed to ask about my boys and expressed interest in their lives. We exchanged many "grand horse" stories, Ami. He was always so proud of you and beamed when he talked about you.
Ed and I will keep you in our prayers. We'll always remember John and his friendly ways. We could all learn a lesson from him about taking time to talk with folks and show interest in their lives.
What a man! What a life!
God's Peace.

There are not many teachers that leave as lasting an impression on his students as Col. Poindexter. From having him come to class in full uniform, to stopping by to see him mowing the grass in that great straw hat, he never failed to make an incredible impression! I wish I'd had the chance to see him more recently, but I will always remember him being the most inspirational, entertaining, and devoted teacher!

The Colonel was a fine man and officer. I had the privilege of serving under him in Vietnam as a Platoon Commander, as a S-3A, and he offered the command of a company. In all capacities he never dropped the ball.

I am so sorry and deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved Mr. Poindexter.
‘Col. P’ was brilliantly witty, interesting & fun, and the contagious enthusiasm with which he approached teaching made it my first experience in a ‘college-like’ environment. His magnetic charm and sincere appreciation for knowledge made students genuinely want to be there to interact with and learn from him (of course, his hilarious animated jingles never hurt either).
As we all commented on so many occasions, he was also a true gentleman, kind and respectful of everyone.
He will be greatly missed.
The world was simply better and brighter in the presence of John Poindexter.

Mr. Poindexter was one of my favorite teachers when I was in the 9th grade at the Intermediate High School in Summerville. He was such a joy to have as a teacher. He always made class fun and exciting and always had a great attitude and a smile on his face. Even after I graduated, I would see him at the bank, and he would stop and speak and make it a point to find out what I had been up to. I know that he will be sadly missed.

It was my distinctive pleasure to serve as a Platoon Sergeant under Colonel Poindexter's Command while with the 2nd Bn 1st Marine Regiment 1968-69 South of Danang RVN. The Colonel was well respected by his men and had compassion to their combat and emotional requirements.
A Marine of his caliber saved many lives in combat. His men will surely miss him forever, With Brother Hood, Honor and Courage
