John Platt Obituary

Rev. Dr. John V. Platt COLUMBIA - Rev. Dr. John V. Platt passed away Saturday, March 17th, 2012. He is with his Lord whom he deeply loved and willingly served. Rev. Platt was born in 1938 in Columbia to the late John Earl Platt and Verna Bonds Platt. "John Vernon" grew up on his parents' farm near Denmark, SC and graduated from Denmark High School. Continuing his education, "John Vernon" became "John" as he completed studies at Furman University, Southeastern Theological Seminary and Drew University Theological School. He continued ministerial training through the North American Mission Board, the International Missions Board, White Oak Conference Center and Ridgecrest Conference Center. John's 52-year service in ordained ministry included student pastorates in Sycamore and Kingsburg, SC, associate pastorate in Fairforest, SC, pastorates in Dalzell, Laurens and Charleston, SC, director of missions callings in Lancaster and Columbia, SC, part-time chaplaincy with the S.C. Dept. of Corrections and most recently an associate pastorate at Spring Valley Baptist, Columbia, SC. He truly had a passion for engaging people in all walks of life and in far parts of this world. That passion pulled him to lead missions efforts in Canada, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Kenya, Romania, Kyrgyzstan, Taiwan and Honduras and in many places close to home. He strove to provide heart-led leadership and maintained a vision for growth and development. Other ministerial associations included: S.C. Baptist Convention committee assignments and service with the Executive Board, trustee for the Connie Maxwell Children's Home, commissioner on Southern Baptist Convention Historical Commission, member of S.C. Baptist Historical Society and member of Baptist History and Heritage, collegiate ministries at USC-Lancaster and USC in Columbia. John also served the community at large including: S.C. National Guard (5 yrs.), Lions Club (23 yrs.), American Red Cross, United Way of Lancaster, Project Hope Food Ministry in Lancaster, Literacy Council of Lancaster and the Chamber of Commerce of Columbia. At home, John enjoyed active involvement with his neighborhood association and spent much time tending his flowers and gardens, especially his African violets. His ultimate joy was sharing the fruits of his labor with neighbors, family and friends. With his wife, he was eager to invite guests home and strove to perfect his specialties in the kitchen - chicken salad and "John Platt" collards. John developed a love of golf and eventually included it in his missions outreach, which culminated with an annual tournament on behalf of "Transport for Christ." In 2011, organizers named this tournament in his honor. He also supported the football program at his alma mater, Furman University, and engaged players to motivate youth. Surviving are his sons, Todd Platt and Bryan Platt; brothers and sisters-in-law Bill and Leila Platt, Glen and Angela Platt, Randall and Gypsy Platt, and sister and brother-in-law Janis P. Ray and Harry Ray; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Watson and Inez A. Gaskins; aunts Sallie H. Platt, Addie Evelyn B. Moody (Ralph), Mary Elizabeth B. Rowell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his loving wife of nearly 47 years, Mrs. Barbara Gaskins Platt. The Platt family is deeply grateful for the care provided by medical professionals at South Carolina Oncology Associates and Palmetto Health Homecare. The family is also very thankful for the help and support of relatives, neighbors, friends and his church. Services will be held 2 PM Tuesday, March 20, at Spring Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Winburn officiating and Rev. Joe Dempsey assisting. Burial will follow at 5 PM in Bamberg Memory Gardens, Hwy. 78, in Bamberg County, SC. Serving as pallbearers are Raymond Ayers, David Bost, Watson Gaskins, Jim Moody, Keith Ringer and Mike Scott. Friends may call Monday, March 19, from 5 PM until 8 PM at Kornegay & Moseley Funeral Home, 4645 Hardscrabble Rd., Columbia, SC 29229 (803) 788-3334. To Todd & Bryan, I was deeply saddened on hearing of the passing of your father. Such a loving and caring man who had time to listen to others and help them feel better just by being around him. May God bless both of you during this time of grief.

Todd & Bryan...you were and are still blessed to have had such loving and beautiful people as Barbara and John as your parents! I know they felt blessed and proud to have you as their sons. The last few years have to have been so challenging in ways no one else could really understand. May the loss you must inevitably feel be soothed by God's grace and thoughts of their return to God's loving arms. I am certain you both now have at least two loving angels keeping watch over you! Sending my love and sympathy...

I just now heard of Rev. Platts passing and my heart is saddened but know heaven is rejoicing. I have never met a man more special than he was. His love of the Lord and fellowman was so evident in all he did. I was priviledged to have him as interium preacher for over a year and saw first hand a true man of God. He will be greatly missed here on earth because he was truely one of a kind.

A true man of God, a Gentleman! He helped my Church so much and supported the Columbia Metro WMU whole heartedly. A pleasure to know him and to know we will meet again in the Morning!

Everywhere John went and ministry he did made the world a better place than when he found it. My last golf outing with John at the annual meeting was a joy, but he indicated that he was getting tired. In our loss we know that he has found the true joy and rest. We all will miss him. Todd and Bryan, you continue to be in our prayers.

John provided much needed leadership to the Columbia Metro Baptist Association. I appreciate his love and care to me and my family these past two years. Even though his health was failing him he painfully visited me in the hospital and rehab center. John lived his faith and shared it freely. John was a man who walked with God. Thank you his sons fo being faithful to your dad.

John Platt was a fine man and minister to many. I met him years ago in Bladen County, then again in recent years in Spartanburg through our dear friend Joe Dempsey. I spoke to him last at Phyllis Dempsey's funeral service at which he delivered a wonderful eulogy. God be with his family and friends during this difficult time.

During his time in Lancaster, John did a wonderful job as Director Of Missions for the Moriah Baptist Association. He was an invaluable resource for the churches in our area. My deepest condolences to his family, but I am certain they are all aware that John was a saint and he is now enjoying all the advantages that go with sainthood.
