John McSwain Obituary

John T. McSwain GOOSE CREEK - Mr. John T. McSwain, age 79, husband of Annie Nell Willis McSwain, of Goose Creek, SC, passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at a local hospital. Friends and family of Mr. McSwain are invited to attend his funeral service at Harbour Lake Baptist Church, 1056 Redbank Road, Goose Creek, SC 29445, on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 1:00 pm. Burial will immediately follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The McSwain family will be receiving guests at the funeral home this evening, Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm and again tomorrow afternoon at the church from 12:00 noon until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Mr. John Thomas McSwain was born on January 26, 1931 in Spartanburg, SC to the late John William McSwain and the late Beulah Velma Robertson McSwain. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Mrs. Annie Nell Willis. He proudly served his country and retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Boatswain Mate with over 23 years of service. He was also a retiree of the Polaris Missile Facility as a Missile Escort. Mr. McSwain was a member of Harbour Lake Baptist Church, a member of the Dorchester Masonic Lodge and a member of the Omar Shrine Temple in Mount. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Annie Nell Willis McSwain; two daughters, Velma 'Toni' McWhorter (Douglas L.) of Goose Creek, SC and Cathy Rutledge (Robert) of Goose Creek, SC; one sister, Joline Juanita Joyce of Tampa, FL; three brothers, John William McSwain, Jr., Danny McSwain and Donny McSwain, all of Spartanburg, SC; two step-brothers, Johnny Smith and David Smith of Spartenburg, SC; four grandchildren, Kelly McWhorter Gambala (Neil R.), Michael Lee Rutledge, Shaun Thomas Rutledge, and Michael E. Sargent, all of Goose Creek; five great-grandchildren, Michael David Sargent, Douglas Allen Sargent, Neil R. Gambala, Jr., Haley Elizabeth Gambala and Zoey Jade Gambala. Mr. McSwain was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, the late Mrs. Donna Lee McWhorter Sargent. Flowers will be accepted at the funeral home.
