John Bryce McLaulin, M.D. WAVERLY, GA - John Bryce McLaulin, M.D. died on July 16, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. He was born on April 20, 1952 in Charleston, SC, to the late Ida James McLaulin and Brecious Lucien (Pete) McLaulin Jr. He was a graduate of the College of Charleston (1973) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), College of Medicine (1977). After his graduation from medical school, he completed his residency in psychiatry at MUSC (1981). Dr. McLaulin was a board-certified psychiatrist and had an accomplished career in medicine. He devoted his professional life to academics, public service, and patient care. Early in his career, Dr. McLaulin served as a professor at the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. He engaged research and clinical practice at the LSU Medical Center, with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS treatment and was invited to present his work at several conferences, including the International AIDS Conference. In addition to his work in HIV/AIDS, Dr. McLaulin specialized in addiction medicine and behavioral health. He served as the Chief Medical Officer at Community Behavioral Health in Philadelphia, PA and collaborated on many notable projects, including the Beck Initiative Training Program in Cognitive Therapy. Dr. McLaulin ended his career in public service as the Assistant Commissioner for Behavioral Health for the State of Georgia in Atlanta, GA. After leaving public service life, he relocated to Waverly, GA where he practiced psychiatry for seven years in Brunswick and St. Marys, GA until his unexpected passing. His family and friends enjoyed his excellent cooking, exceptional taste, and keen knowledge about gardening and horticulture. Dr. McLaulin was an animal-lover and enjoyed time on his land with his dogs, goats, geese, and chickens. Dr. McLaulin will be deeply missed by his only child, Sarah Elizabeth McLaulin Penington, his son-in-law, Elliott Bryant Penington Jr., and all his animals. Sarah: I just stumbled across seeing your Dad’s obit. I was his secretary at LSUMC when he was the Director of the Psychiatry clerkship. I have an abundance of many wonderful memories working with him. I also remember one summer you came to visit & spent a day with my daughter Alison & I shopping, being silly & just doing girl things
Oh how he loved you. You had an awesome dad. So sorry for your loss❤

Too soon. I miss his sense of humor, his core ethical nature, and the honorable way he treated everyone. We had a 20 year connection, and it was too short. He shared wonderful stories about his family and his land and his animals. He told me he was going to start a group for me and 9 others -- for people too smart for their own good. I expect to see him as the charter member.

Sarah,
I worked with your dad when he was a resident at MUSC, had dinners with him and your mother, and your maternal grandparents lived across the street from us on Sullivan's Island. I remember your dad's humor, incredible wit, and kindness to everyone. He was so smart, and provided competent and compassionate care to his patients. I remember his treatment of an adolescent in the late 1970s whom he diagnosed with bipolar disorder when we did not usually diagnose that illness on what was then the adolescent inpatient unit at MUSC.
He invited my husband to give a Grand Rounds at MCG and we had a delightful visit with him and your mother in Augusta. You were a baby then.
I lost touch with your dad after he left MCG, but wanted you to know how highly I regard him and your mom.

I was a patient of his and just learned of his passing. I was so very sorry to hear of it. He was a wonderful man and excellent doctor. A rare combination. We had many talks about the accomplishments of his mother and his own background and interests. I am sure I will not find his equal now or in the future. He will be deeply missed. God bless his family and friends in their time of grief.

Two weeks after seeing him, I received a phone call about his passing. Immediately, my eyes were filled with tears. He was one of the good guys- personally and professionally. He treated his clients with compassion and looked beyond the mental limitations. He educated his clients on medications and normalized that it is okay to take medications without over prescribing them. He helped me manage my anxiety while I was in college.
His stories about his geese and science related topics where the highlight of our conversations.
I recall our last conversation was about the last pandemic his experience and survived when he was younger.

He loved life and never considered retiring. He will be missed by the Camden county community.

To his daughter: my heart goes out to you. He spoke of you often and when he did, his face had a glow. Thank you for posting this obituary.
