John McGough Obituary

John Francis McGough KIAWAH ISLAND, SC - John Francis McGough, 86, a native of Connecticut and beloved husband of Maryanne Wicko McGough, died Sunday, October 10, at his home in Kiawah, with his wife and her "sister" Elaine at his bedside. John was a man of myriad accomplishments, each of which gave him great joy. His career spanned many years and included being a Founding Trustee of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut; Superintendent of Schools of the Bridgeport, Connecticut Diocese; and Vice President of Corporate Human Resources at Sandoz (now Novartis) Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey. John was an avid reader who also appreciated the joys of music as well as the occasional round of golf. John will be remembered and deeply missed by his wife, family, and friends whom he touched in so many ways. He was a spontaneous man who loved surprises and whose gentleness and unselfishness earned him the friendship, respect, and affection of the many people whose lives he enriched. Nicknamed "Reds," John's Irish wit and gift of storytelling endeared him to all who were fortunate to know him. His generosity, warmth, and unfailing ability to understand and love his fellow human beings will be remembered and cherished. John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Maryanne, by cousins in Vermont and Connecticut, and a niece and two nephews by marriage. The family wishes to thank the Hospice of Charleston for guiding them on this difficult journey and is especially grateful to Sara Jones, RN, who had almost a sixth sense of what was needed on any given day. A Mass of Christian Burial is planned in Nichols, Connecticut, with committal in Lakeview Cemetery in Bridgeport. Details are pending. Donations in John's memory may be sent to the Church of the Holy Spirit Building Fund, P.O. Box 719, Johns Island, SC 29457-0719 or the Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Boulevard, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/ deaths

Marianne, I am a former Sandoz exec who knew John only professionally. He was a man of great character, who understood human relationships like no other person I have ever known. I am saddened to hear of his passing. Mike DuBois (St. Thomas, VI)

Maryanne:
Such greatness in one human being should be celebrated by all. Be aware that you have been blessed--and rejoice that your memories are those few can ever find--prayers and affection come your way for today and especially for your future strength and healing.

Our Dear Maryanne,

John entered my life when he became the principal of Sacred Heart School in Bridgeport, Conn. Quickly, he befriended myself and Shirlee Mahoney. Sixty-one years of his light in my life was Grace upon Grace.
Art, also, received his friendship and love.
As long as I live, my life will be touched by his love.

God bless you for loving him faithfully and doing for him what we could not do..

Love,

Maryanne:

John was a best friend as well as a trusted and respected business colleague. Over the years, I observed that anyone who met and grew to know John was a better person for the experience. His efforts and concerns toward the success of the Sandoz business enterprise never limited his constant genuine concern for the welfare of its employees and their families, especially the men and women and families of those who reported to him in the Human Resources function.

On a personal level, John and you bceame close personal friends to Philippa, Richard and me, and together we shared many happy and sad life experiences. These memories will remain with us forever. John's presence remains with all those whose lives he touched.
