John W. Johnston JAMES ISLAND - Entered into eternal rest Thursday, October 13, 2011, John W. Johnston of James Island, South Carolina. A Gathering of Friends will be held for John at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 5 pm. Burial will be private. Born May 17, 1954 in Norfolk, Virginia, John was the son of Kenneth I. Johnston and Sara Bennett Johnston. He was employed as an Operations Manager at Moore Drums, was a veteran of the US Navy, a member of the American Legion Post 147 and the James Island VFW.. He was a graduate of the College of Charleston Survivors include his daughters: Emily Johnston of Evans, GA and Frances Small of Charleston; brothers: Kenneth I. Johnston, James L. Johnston, both of James Island and George M. Johnston of Charlotte, NC; sisters: Deborah Johnston Marlowe of N. Charleston and Elizabeth Johnston Carpenter of Walterboro, SC; a grandson: Benjamin H. Wainwright. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Charleston, Inc., 219 Hwy 52 North, Moncks Corner, SC 29461 or the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, N. I met John through mutual friends at the VFW. We grew to become friends. He was was a really good friend to me when I needed one the most.
