John Clarence Houston Charleston - John Clarence "Popi" Houston, 78, of Charleston, husband to Cheryl "Cheri" Houston, entered into eternal rest on April 9, 2021, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 6, 1942, in Tucson, AZ, John was a son of the late Gladys Olivia Collins Houston and John LaFate Houston. John, was a US Navy Veteran serving on the USS Rock and USS Henry Clay; worked in the car business at several dealerships including Palmetto Ford where he met his wife; he was also Owner and President of Cobwebs Incorporated. John enjoyed gardening, old westerns, spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs. Besides his wife, "Cheri" or "Noni", John is survived by a sister, Carolyn Ahmie (Kenneth); sons, Kevin Skarp (Kelley) and Jonathan Kurzawa; daughter, Melinda Houston Gonzales (Mike); grandchildren, Kylie Noelle Skarp (Derek), Kross Gray Skarp, Kaleb Lillian Kurzawa, Holden Edward Bass, Kenneth Colby Weeks and Brandon Tyler Houston; along with his dogs, Kooper and Brady. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by two sisters, Jeanie McKool and Marion Poorman. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 15, 2021, from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at McAlister Smith Funeral Home, 347 Folly Road, James Island 29412. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021, at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Rd., Charleston, SC 29412.
