John Hanlin Obituary

John E. Hanlin SUMMERVILLE - Lt. Col. (retired) John E. Hanlin passed away on Wednesday, December 14th at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro. He was born on February 13, 1924 in Atlanta, Georgia to Harriet C. and George P. Hanlin. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Emmala R. Hanlin. He is also survived by his brother Bobby, 2 daughters Sherry and Linda, 2 sons John and Bill, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. John received a Bachelors and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina and the USAF Institute of Technology, respectively. He received another Master's Degree in Education and Counseling from Troy State University. John was a veteran of the United States Air Force for 32 years and was a pilot in World War II and Vietnam, where he received the purple heart. He ended his military career as the First Professor of Aerospace Studies at what is now Charleston Southern University. After his retirement from the military, he became a small business owner in Summerville, SC. He was the co-owner of the Royal Art Gallery, Home Care Health Center and Uniforms Unlimited. John was a member of the Summerville Rotary Club with perfect attendance. Funeral service will be held Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 3 o'clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 o'clock until the hour of service. Burial will be held on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Veterans Victory House, (who cared so well for John) 2461 Sidney's Road, Walterboro, SC 29488 or Help of Summerville, 202 Poplar Road, Summerville 29483.
