John Gibbs Obituary

John Gressette Gibbs CHARLESTON - "I believe that forgiving them is God's function. Our job is simply to arrange the meeting." H. Norman Schwarzkopf, 11 Sep 2001. John Gressette Gibbs, 40, a most accomplished sailor and chef, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2014 at Levine & Dickson Hospice in Huntersville, NC. John was born on April 3, 1973. His parents were the late Dr. John E. Gibbs, Jr. and the late Anne Gressette Noll. He attended East Cooper Elementary School, Porter Gaud, Wando High School, Bishop England High School, Country Day, Lowcountry Academy and graduated from Middleton High School in 1990. John was a proud Charlestonian and equally proud of his family's history here. John felt he was as much a part of the fabric of his dear Charleston as its historic proprietors. He adored Charleston's beautiful harbor and navigating her waters. As a sailor, John placed third in the nation at the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in the Junior Sunfish Fleet. He was passionate about hunting with his beloved dog, Shadrack, and loved offshore fishing, driving his "Jimmy" and traveling with friends to music venues across the US. John was a self-taught and gifted musician, whose love for music knew no boundaries. He was an incredibly dedicated, honest and loyal friend with a magnificent sense of humor. He was a tenacious solver of computer and technological problems, a voracious reader and scholar of books and music. He was a zealous music collector and compiled and constantly updated a database for online music traders, consisting of over 50 legendary artists, ranging from Frank Sinatra to his treasured Grateful Dead. John adored his siblings, nieces and nephews and the invaluable time he spent with them. He believed that "To forget yourself is to see everything else. And to see everything else is to become an understanding molecule in evolution, a conscious tool of The Universe." John is that conscious tool and shed a constant light in mere possibilities of darkness and will be remembered as an eternally kind, beautiful, innocent and joyful brightness. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Catherine R. Dixon; and his cousin, Coming Ball Gibbs, Jr. John is survived by his son, Luke Awlasewicz; step-father, B. Robert Crosby; step-brother, Christopher A. Crosby; half-brother, John E. Gibbs III; brother-in-law, Benjamin D. Dixon; aunts and uncles, F. Reeves, Jr. and Gail M. Gressette, Thomas P. and Frances M. Gressette and Dr. James G., Jr. and Lucretia G. Townsend; his three nephews, Benjamin D. Dixon, Jr., Caleb T. Dixon and Kenneth R. Crosby; his two nieces, Laura A. Dixon and Elizabeth R. Crosby; ten cousins, F. Reeves Gressette III, Arnold J. Gressette, Thomas P. Gressette, Jr., Ila Latham Gressette, Barbara G. Adams, J. Moultrie Townsend III, John Gibbs Townsend, Mrs. James H. Parker, Mrs. Van Willis and Rheta S. Barnes; and his special caregivers, Carol and Scott Hershey. In lieu of flowers, friends and family request that donations be made to Tunes-For-Tots. A memorial service will be held at a future date. For information, call 843-697-6555. No words to say no words to convey the feelings inside... I have for you. Deep in my heart... Deep in my soul...Safe from the guards of intellect and reason. Leaving me at loss for words to express my feelings. -TC . Sometimes I just need to talk to you and the only thing that gives me peace is that no matter what....you are still listening!!! I know I will see you soon and we have a lot to catch up on. Like the Dead retiring..... Ha... As if? Bobby is already playing shows! Such fools.... We know better;) Always did!!!!

We also knew John through our daughter. He was always a sweet spirited young man and though sometimes led a troubled life, was always smiling. He is with God now, and is no longer in sorrow or pain. We are thankful for the wonderful times we shared with him and will always treasure our memories. May God Bless You John

Wow. I know its been a few years since I seen John. But memories from our years together as roommates in Charleston/Mount Pleasant will still carry on. My prayers are with the family. He was a true friend as it states in the obituary.

Our thoughts are with the families of John and his sister Catherine, our neighbors in Snee Farm, especially with Bob and Ben. This picture of John says it all.

My sincere condolences to family and loved ones. . I didn't know this young man - who's left here too soon - but his photo and obituary are a very touching and meaningful tribute to him. Thank you for sharing it with the community at large. I loved the "to forget yourself" quote and found that John's spirit shone brightly through the writer's thoughtful words. Thank you!

I knew Giblet as a childhood friend of my son Jon Bradsher and he was the most precious and adorable little boy. I was saddened this morning when my Jon called and said one his most loyal friends was no longer with us. I believe in this world today one who is with you no matter what happens is rare indeed.

I love you my precious angel. I know now that God has you and that you are truly "playing in the band." Thank you for loving me and being my best friend. I love you with all my heart.

While I did not have the honor of knowing John in life, I got to know him in recent days through memories shared with me by his dear friends Jamie Cade and Carol Hershey. It is obvious to me that John touched the lives of all he knew in a positive and loving way, and that he left this world a better place than he found it.
