John Elwood Obituary

John Paul Elwood MONTEZUMA, NC - Dr. John Paul Elwood, age 66, of Montezuma, NC, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, in Columbia, SC. He was born July 23, 1944, in Batavia, IL, a son of John Franklin Elwood of Montezuma, NC and the late Arleene Kuhn Elwood. A second generation High School Valedictorian, he graduated Magna Cum Laud from Northwestern University and grauduated Magna Cum Laud from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with his Phd. in Physical Chemistry. Dr. Elwood was an Executive with International Paper Company and had taught at Claflin University and Stevens University, where he received recognition as an Outstanding Professor. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity, served as an officer in the Avery County Democratic Party, enjoyed reading, carpentry, growing and processing apple trees, and was an avid model railroader. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. In addition to his father he leaves behind his wife, Barbara Elwood of Montezuma, NC; son, Craig Elwood, and his wife, Krista, of Mount Pleasant, SC; daughter, Carrie Alexis Elwood of Mount Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, John Robert Elwood, Zachary Douglas Elwood, Winston Craig Bostic, all of Mount Pleasant, SC; brother, Kent David Elwood of Jacksonville, IL. Funeral services for Dr. John Paul Elwood were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2010, from the Aaron Baptist Church in Montezuma with the Revs. Dennis Aldridge and Terry Alexander officiating. Interment followed in Montezuma Cemetery. Words of comfort and memories may be shared with the family and viewed at www.rsfh.net.
