John Blakeley Obituary

BLAKELEY, JR., John ANDREWS - John Muldrew Blakeley, Jr., 87, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet. Mr. Blakeley was born in Andrews on June 1, 1919, a son of the late John Muldrew Blakeley and Mary Lee Rose Blakeley. He grew up in Andrews, graduated from Andrews High School, and attended the University of South Carolina. Mr. Blakeley served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Blakeley was a retired owner of Blakeley Brothers Furniture Company and Blakeley Brothers Auto Parts. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Andrews and was a former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Blakeley was active in community affairs. He was a former member of the Waccamaw Regional Planning Commission. Mr. Blakeley was a lifelong member of the Gamecock Club. He was also a member of the Winyah Indigo Society and Harper Lodge #225, Ancient Freemasons. Mr. Blakeley was predeceased by: his wife, Kathleen Kate Nelson Blakeley; a granddaughter, Kathleen Kent Thornton; a brother, Muldrew L. Blakeley; and a sister, Kathleen Ericksen. Surviving are: a daughter Julianne Blakeley of Litchfield Beach; a step-mother, Gladys Turner Blakeley; a brother, Harris Blakeley of Andrews; a sister, Geneva Blakeley Woodbury of Georgetown; four grandchildren, Blake Thornton of Mt. Pleasant, Clay Thornton of Columbia, Kate Nelson Thornton of Charleston, and Olivia Lee T. Charney of Weston, Conn.; a great-granddaughter, Legare' Charney of Weston, Conn.; and a special care giver, Susie Scott of Andrews. Funeral services will be two o'clock Thursday afternoon, April 19, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Andrews. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery.
