Joanna McCabe Obituary

Joanna Evans McCabe CHARLESTON - Joanna Evans McCabe of Charleston, SC, formerly of Selbyville, DE, passed away on May 31 at the age of 92. She was born in Roxana, DE, on February 9, 1923, to the late Theodore and Joanna Baker Evans. Mrs. McCabe was a graduate of the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Wilmington, DE, Class of 1944 and the University of Delaware, Class of 1963, where she received her BSN degree. She was the Director of Nursing at the Stokley Center in Georgetown, DE for 34 years. She was a member of the Delaware Board of Nursing for six years and served as its president for two of those years. Mrs. McCabe was a participant in continuing education in the management of Development Disabilities at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and the University of Washington, Seattle. She established and directed the Delaware Community Nursing and Developmental Program for early intervention of Children with developmental disabilities. Mrs. McCabe received The Order of the First State from Governors Pete DuPont and Mike Castle for services to the developmentally disabled and for her work in the prevention of mental disabilities. She was awarded the 1977 Nurse of the Year award by the National Foundation of the March of Dimes for professional leadership in the fight against birth defects. She was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in American Nursing, Library of Congress, 3rd edition, 1988-89. Mrs. McCabe was a former member of Salem Methodist Church, Selbyville, DE. She loved to play bridge and was an avid gardener. She was married for 61 years to her high school sweetheart, Lorenzo McCabe, who preceded her in death in 2006. During her final years she was a resident at Bishop Gadsden retirement community, where she made many new friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Elbert, Clifford, Cashar, and Lynwood Evans, her sister, Delaphine Evans Dennis, and a niece. She is survived by her daughter Linda McCabe Allen (David), her two grandsons, Jeffrey Allen (Christy) and Michael Allen (Laura), her five great-grandchildren, Eva Allen, Ellie Allen, Jack Allen, Avery Allen, and Porter Allen, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 PM on Saturday, June 6 at Hastings Funeral Home, 19 South Main, Selbyville, DE. Prior to the service there will be visitation for friends and family from 11 AM to 12 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Roxana Cemetery, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request memorials be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Palmetto Chapter, 810 Dutch Square Blvd, Ste. 114, Columbia, SC 29210 or the Emerson Rose Heart Foundation, PO Box 935, Clemson, SC 29633. Hi Linda Lou, I send my sincere condolences to you and your family in your time of great sorrow. I lost my youngest daughter in November.
