Jewell Hiers Obituary

HIERS, Jewell WALTERBORO - Mrs. Jewell Goodwin Hiers, wife of the late Marion Houck Hiers, died Tuesday evening surrounded by her family. She was 83. Mrs. Hiers was born in Colleton County, April 24, 1922 one of 12 children of the late Phillip Goodwin and Julia Miley Goodwin. She graduated from Lodge High School in 1939 and Anderson Beauty College in 1941. She was a beautician in both Greenwood and Holly Hill. In 1950, she opened Jewell's Beauty Salon in Walterboro, which she operated for over 34 years. Mrs. Hiers was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Walterboro, where she was a member of the Lula Strickland Circle, the Will Goodwin Sunday School Class, and former member of the Chancel Choir. She is survived by two daughters, Diane H. Wood and husband Arthur of Stone Mountain, GA and Phyllis H. McInerney and husband John o Edisto Island; five grandchildren, Art Wood of Tucker, GA, Ashley Person of San Antonio, TX, Capt. Michael McInerney, currently serving in Iraq, Capt. Alyson McInerney, currently stationed in Guantonamo Bay, Cuba, and 2nd Lt. John Ryan McInerney of Wisconsin. There are three great-grandchildren, Jakob, Parker, and Bailey McInerney. Mrs. Hiers is also survived by her twin sister, Julia Goodwin Harley of Kline, SC. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in the Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Nelson Stokes, officiating. Burial will follow in the Live Oak Cemetery and members of the Will Goodwin Sunday School Class will served as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to The Live Oak Cemetery or to the Bethel United Methodist Church.
