Jewell Goodloe Obituary

Jewell Goodloe GROSSE POINTE PARK, MI - Jewell Eva Miller Goodloe was born January 18, 1926 in Omaha, Nebraska, the third child of four born to Jewel Anna and David O'Neil Miller. Jewell (GG) was called home peacefully on February 19, 2012 in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan surrounded by her children and nephew John. Jewell spent her formative years in Omaha. She attended Lothrop Elementary School (1939) and was a graduate of Central High School (1943). She is a 1946 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where she earned a Bachelor's of Science in Education. She was active in the civil rights movement in the 50's and 60's and participated in Woolworth's Diner sit ins. Jewell was a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated with 66 years of sisterhood and service. She initiated into Gamma Beta in 1944 and bridged to Delta Epsilon Omega in Omaha, Nebraska in 1946. She was last active in Gamma XI Omega in Charleston, South Carolina in 2007. Jewell was a retired teacher and administrator of 42 years. She began her career at Long Elementary School where she was one of the first thirteen "Black" Educators in Omaha Public Schools. Jewell had a successful 30 year career with the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha where she taught students who were committed for psychiatric care at Nebraska Psychiatric Institute, until her retirement in 1981. After retirement she remained active and volunteered with the Salvation Army, Goodwill services, and tutored elementary students. Jewell was honored by the Salvation Army in 1992. She served on the Board of Directors for the Christ Child Society from 1991-1996 and was awarded the "Putting People First" award from KETV Channel 7. Jewell loved bridge and scrap booking with family and friends. In 2004 she moved to Charleston, S.C. to live with her daughter Maria, son-in-law Bruce and newest granddaughter Maya Jewell. She continued to adopt adult children in Charleston and Seattle who fondly referred to her as Mother Goodloe or "GG". She was fondly named GG by her eldest granddaughter, Angel, so she would not have to share "grandmother". Jewell actively played bridge while in Charleston and Seattle, and was a member of the Northwestern Section and American Bridge Association; she attended many affairs including the Spoleto Arts Festival. Jewell is survived by two children; Leonard Oden Goodloe Jr. (Angela) of Austin, TX, and Maria L. Goodloe-Johnson (Bruce) of Grosse Pointe Park, MI. Four grandchildren: Angel Adams (Ganiyu), Leonard T. Goodloe, Thomas Goodloe (Zavonya), and Maya Johnson. Four Great Grandchildren: Selah Adams, Lani Adams, Zion Goodloe and Kendal Goodloe. Eleven nieces and nephews; Frederick Graham, Stephen Graham (Joanne), Anita Wardlaw (Howard), Julie Mayers (Crispin), Felicia Williams, Lt. Col. John C. Williams Jr. (Mildred), Rochelle Flax, Jonathan Ray (Doreen), David Ray, Danielle Mallory (Willie), and Jace Miller, with a host of grand nieces and nephews, cousins, relatives and very dear friends will deeply miss Jewell, fondly known as GG. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Clair Memorial United Methodist Church, 5544 Ames Avenue, Omaha, Nebraska. The Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will be held during the service. I often think of you and your laugh. I wish you would have drank with me when I offered you that shot. I hope I will be the grandmother you are(were).

I miss you everyday but mostly on Weds. Please continue to pray for me, I heard you were in VIP.
