Jetter Lackey Obituary

Jetter B. Lackey, Jr. N. CHARLESTON - Jetter B. Lackey, Jr., entered into eternal rest on Saturday, August 28, 2010. He was the husband of Mary M. "Madge" McLawhorn Lackey, deceased. Friends are invited to visit with family members at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road, between 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. A funeral service will be held at Park Circle Presbyterian Church, 4701 Park Place W., North Charleston, SC 29405, Thursday, September 2, 2010, at 12:00 Noon with burial immediately following at Riverview Memorial Park, 3715 Azalea Drive, North Charleston, SC 29405. JB was born in Hiddenite, NC. He was the son of Lenis Bowles Lackey and Jetter B. Lackey, Sr. He was a member of Park Circle Presbyterian Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). JB's professional career in the Charleston Naval Shipyard spanned nearly forty years of civil and military service. He entered the Shipyard in July 1943 as an apprentice electrician. He was granted a military furlough from April 1945 until September 1946. During this time, he served in the US Navy aboard the USS Princeton CV-37, the first aircraft carrier modified to go through the Panama Canal. He progressed from Electrician to head of the Temporary Service Shop where he organized and instituted the first apprentice program in Shop 99. Through training and development designed to produce a skill level necessary to execute vital shop functions, both performance and career opportunities were enhanced. He then became the Nuclear Production Manager (300N). In this capacity, he helped lead the Yard to dramatic improvements in the work of the nuclear propulsion plant and upgrade of the worker-trainee program subsequently used as a model by other shipyards. JB was the recipient of many performances and incentive awards culminating in the receiving of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award when he retired in 1983. JB began playing golf in 1963. During this time, he qualified and played in the National Public Links, won two state championships for the Elks and was the Seniors Champ for Charleston in 1984. He remained active in a number of SC golf associations until his death. JB is survived by two daughters, Trina D. Bowers and husband Kenny of Hanahan and Sabrina K. Ehlis and husband Brandon of Minneapolis, MN; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two sisters, Betty Strickland of Waycross, GA and Peggy Bennett and husband Sam of Hanahan. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested for the American Heart Association, 409 King Street, Suite 300, Charleston, SC 29403.
