Jessie Tobiasz Obituary

Jessie Dolores Tobiasz 1916 - 2020
NEW HARTFORD - Our mother, Jessie Tobiasz, passed away peacefully at the home of her son, Robert, on March 14, 2020. She had just celebrated her 104th birthday and even attempted to blow out her candles.
Jessie was born on March 9, 1916, in Utica, to Andrew and Margaret (Fortuna) Wentka. She was married for 44 years to Sigmund Tobiasz who preceded her in death in February 1981. Early in life, she worked for Divine Bros., AD Julliard and then co-founded with her husband, the Tobiasz Lumber Company where she worked as a bookkeeper. Most of her time was spent being a homemaker and raising her children.
Jessie is survived by her two sons, Daniel (Ann) Tobiasz, Port St. Lucie, FL and Robert Tobiasz, New Hartford; and daughter, Judy (Mark) Woodington, South Bend, IN; seven grandchildren, Kathy (Kenneth) Winstanley, Stuart, FL, Daniel Tobiasz (Randall Kelly), Port St. Lucie, FL, Joseph (Victoria) Tobiasz, Port St. Lucie, FL, Christopher (Sylvia) Tobiasz, Hickory, NC, Brian (Donna) Tobiasz, Basking Ridge, NJ, Alexander (Serena) Tobiasz, Kill Devil Hills, NC and Amy Burns, South Bend, IN; 13 great-grandchildren, Colleen (Michael) Blagg, Syracuse, Kenneth Tobiasz, Stuart, FL, Ryan and Natalie Tobiasz, Stuart, FL, Amelia Payne (step-great granddaughter), Hickory, NC, Anthony and Cassidy Tobiasz, Basking Ridge, NJ, Alexander, Jr., Aydan, Angel Marie and Skye, Kill Devil Hills, NC and Alona and Madix Burns, South Bend, IN; and four great-great-grandchildren, Koalden, Kyah, and Krisstian Payne, Hickory, NC and Margot Jean Blagg, Syracuse. Her sisters, Julia Dykas, Stefania Pitera, Lucy Heitzman, Helen Reittinger; and brother, Theodore Wentka, preceded her in death.
Jessie was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church in New York Mills. She was a longtime member of The Sacred Heart Rosary Society, Legion of Mary, Orchard Lake, Hill Top Seniors, Polonaise Seniors, West Side Seniors and past member of the Skenandoa Golf Club. In the past, Jessie was an avid golfer at Skenandoa and the Twin Ponds Women's Progressive League. She bowled with the Bendix girls and with a morning senior league. In her youth, she played basketball in the church leagues and that is where she met her husband. She liked to fish and took many rustic fishing trips with her husband into the Canadian wilderness sleeping in their station wagon. She had an adventurous spirit and went hot air ballooning, glided over the coast of Florida, rode in helicopters and was always willing to travel. She and her husband vacationed in Florida during the winter, traveled abroad and took a cruise with their friends. She was a regular bingo player at Holy Trinity Church, enjoyed playing at the Casino and in the past enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing and bowling on the Wii. She was an avid gardener raising roses, indoor orchids and African violets.
It says in Corinthians 13:4-8: Love is always patient and kind; love is never jealous; love is not boastful or conceited, it is never rude and never seeks its own advantage, it does not take offense or store up grievances. Love does not rejoice at wrongdoing but finds its joy in the truth. It is always ready to make allowances to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. Love never comes to an end. This described our mother.
Due to the present health concerns and in keeping with the directives of the CDC and the National Funeral Directors Association, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.
Please consider remembrances in Jessie's name to Hospice & Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Rd, New Hartford NY 13413 or Sacred Heart & St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 201 Main St., New York Mills, NY 13417.

Your mom was always so active outside, golfing and working around her home and especially her garden. I remember seeing her on a regular basis when I would walk with my dad. You are all in my prayers.

On July 22, 1985, your mom, my Mom, and I all left Oneida County Airport for Poland. After a brief stop in Frankfurt, West Germany, we arrived with the Holy Cross Polish National Catholic Church Tour Group in Warsaw, Poland. We toured Poland, and took the bus to many other parts of Poland. Your momwho I assume was probably in her mid to late 60's by thenwas such a trooper. She went on every tour, walked through every church, traversed every catacomb, and visited every museum that the group visited without complaint. She even accompanied my Mom to the island of heilpronounced hell in Polishfor a 3-hour tour, a 3-hour tour. Unfortunately, while I was with the good Fatherthe then Polish priest heading the tourin a quest for live eels that he remembered purchasing and eating while a child in Poland, your mom agreed to go with my Mom to try to find BARGAIN Polish souvenirs. Father told EVERYONE repeatedly that we had only 3 hours on the island and then our boatthe second to last boat back to Gdansk that night would be leavingwith the next one being an old, rickety, fishing boat that arrived several hours later and many miles away from our hotel. That said, Father and I bee-lined it for the outdoor fish market, while my Mom and your mom, together, went their own way. Our boat had docked about noon after a 30 minute cruise and was scheduled to head back to Gdansk at 3 p.m. This was plenty of time to get everyone back to the hotel before gathering at 6 p.m. for our scheduled 7 p.m. dinner. That IS, if you made the boat's scheduled 3 p.m. departure. Father and I did. Your mom and my Mom did not. I hate to say it, but we left your mom on the island of hell to fend for herself. Father, I, and the entire group realized J&JJessie and Jackiewere missing, but we could not delay the boat's departure, so the entire groupminus those twoleft the island promptly at 3 p.m. after 4 blasts of the ship's horn and one last yell of Wszyccy na pokladPolish, for all aboard! As scheduled the rest of us met at 6 p.m. and went down to dinner at 7 p.m. All the time, neither your mom nor my Mom was anywhere to be found. The 5-course meal went course by course until almost 9 p.m. when dessert was about to be served. Astonishingly, as the last piece of placekPolish cakewas being served, in walked Jackie and Jessie. They each looked tired, disheveled, and slightly upset. Father looked at them perplexingly and asked, Where were you two? To which my Mom responded, souvenir shopping and to which your mom added, ya, Jackie wanted to save tree dollars on a wooden plate of the czarna Madonna.

Evidently, my Mom took your mom to a remote souvenir shop to get a special dealmy Mom had been there before with Aunt Lucyand they ended up missing the 3 p.m. boat's departure, but was able to catch the 6 p.m. fishing boat's departure, which dropped them off about 100 miles away from the hotel, upon which they took a cab to drive over 2 hours to get to the hotel right before the last dessert was being served. Nevertheless, you mom never said a harsh word about my Mom, and the rest of the trip proceeded flawlessly.

Quite the woman.

On behalf of all of the admission workers at Holy Trinity Church, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Jessie's family. She will be greatly missed by all. We loved her cheerful disposition, beautiful hair, and meticulously manicured nails!! It sounds like she lived a very full life and that you all will have wonderful memories. Heaven just received another beautiful Angel...may she rest in peace.
