Jessie Stokes Obituary

STOKES, Jessie LAKE CITY - Mrs. Jessie Lee Evans Stokes, 98, passed away peacefully, April 13, 2008, at the White Oak Estates. Mrs. Stokes was born in Florence County on March 16, 1910, a daughter of the late John Richard Cox and the late Sara Jane Stone Cox Powell. She was a widow of the late Tommie James Evans and Luke Hutchinson Stokes. Mrs. Stokes was a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Novalene Gowdy (Hal) of Spartanburg; a son, Mims Evans of Ashland, Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Betty S. Evans of Lake City; six granddaughters, Tracy Harrison of Ashland, Virginia, Robin Evans of Richmond, Virginia, Julie Hutchinson of Lake City, Laura Smith of Charlotte, Caroline Gowdy of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Elizabeth Abramson (Chad) of Columbia; three grandsons, Scott Evans of Ashland, Virginia, Michael Evans of Lake City, and Trey Gowdy (Terri) of Spartanburg; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stokes is preceded in death by two sons, Heston Evans and Zola Evans; two brothers, Richard Oakland Cox and Foley Jackson Cox; a half-brother, Thetis Edmond Powell; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Evens. The Stokes family will have visitation from 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in the funeral home. Funeral services for Mrs. Stokes will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2008 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lake City Memorial Park.
