Jessie McClarren Obituary

McCLARREN, Jessie Jessie Powell McClarren, widow of the late John K. McClarren died on the morning of April 3, 2009. Mrs. McClarren was born in Spiro, OK, on December 7, 1910, the daughter of John and Nora Anderson Powell. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma at Talaquah. An accomplished pianist, she accompanied vocal groups and played for ballet recitals after she and her husband moved to Arlington, VA. She was a substitute teacher and an active volunteer for the Washington, DC, Red Cross and for church work until retirement in 1977. She accompanied and supported her husband of 58 years in his various positions in the Department of Agriculture. While he was Director of Fairs and Exhibitions for Foreign Agriculture, they traveled extensively, and she acted as his hostess for diplomatic functions. In Arlington, she was a member of the Thomas Nelson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In Charleston, she was a member of Johns Wesley United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Sheila McClarren Davis, PhD and her son-in-law, Edward Braxton Davis, PhD, of Charleston, SC; two grandsons, John Edward Davis, Esq. and his wife Bonnie and their two children, Matthew and Kathryn of Arlington, VA, and James Andrew Davis of Jakarta, Indonesia. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services at the Chapel Mausoleum in Carolina Memorial Park, Monday, April 6, 2009 at two-thirty o'clock. Entombment will follow.
