Jervey Royall Obituary

Jervey DuPre Royall MT. PLEASANT - Jervey DuPre Royall was born in the old village of Mt. Pleasant, SC on June 19, 1917 and died on September 28, 2013 at home in Mt. Pleasant. Son of Emily Courtenay DuPre and Lee Royall and next to the youngest of their seven children, he was educated at Mt. Pleasant Academy and the High School of Charleston. He received a Bachelor's degree in economics from the College of Charleston and studied statistics at the graduate level at the University of South Carolina. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army in World War II and was stationed for two years in India. There, he saw the country's politics and culture firsthand, with visits off the base to Mahatma Gandhi's prayer meetings. He spent his working career at the U.S. Department of Defense/Charleston Naval Shipyard and retired after 30 years in the Management Engineering Office (MEO) in the Commander's Office. While at the Navy Yard, he consulted with other major U.S. naval shipyards during the development of the Polaris nuclear submarine program and was selected to participate in the top secret Operation Redwing hydrogen bomb testing program in the Marshall Islands. After retirement, he was a consultant to several government contractors and to Dr. Hiram Curry's nascent Family Practice Program at MUSC. His was one of a few pioneering families who built the congregation of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian, now a large thriving church serving the area. Active at all levels of church government, he served the local church on the Session and as a Trustee, the Presbytery, Synod, and after retiring, the Mission Board of the General Assembly of the national church. He loved the opera and classical music and was longtime treasurer of the South Carolina Poetry Society during its heyday. In civic affairs, he was active with the Charleston Community Concerts and was a volunteer at the ecumenical Soup Kitchen. Over the years, he served on the Bulls Bay Water Commission, the Bay View Acres Civic Club, the Charleston County Mosquito Abatement Program, and College Preparatory School Board of Trustees. Mr. Royall was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the American Legion. He loved his family and the Lowcountry. In his long lifetime, he saw Mt. Pleasant grow from a sleepy little village, in which he rode the ferry to high school, to a sprawling bedroom community. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Mary-Julia Campbell Royall and daughters Julia Campbell Royall (Brian Kahin) of Washington, DC and Anne DuPre Royall of Mt. Pleasant, grandchildren Angeline DuPre Royall-Kahin and Owen Low Royall-Kahin, sister Anne Bailey Royall, and his dogs. The family appreciates the devotion of caregiver Tina Williams.
