Jerry Harris Obituary

Jerry Douglas Harris JOHNS ISLAND - Jerry Douglas Harris, husband of Martha Bingman Harris of Johns Island, entered into eternal rest on June 30, 2015. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry D. Harris are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 2:00 PM, Thursday, July 2, 2015, at the James A. McAlister Chapel, 1620 Savannah Hwy. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, one hour prior to Service. His Guestbook may be signed at www.Charlestonfunerals.com Jerry was born in Thomasville, GA on October 4, 1935, a son of Douglas Clyde and Frances Ann Smith Harris. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy and was an Environmental Engineer for the John Deere Co. Jerry was the type of person who was a loyal friend, thoughtful of others and always had their best interest at heart. He had an unusual sense of humor that captivated all who encountered him. He was never one who tried to impress and always felt comfortable with himself. His down to earth nature always favored function over aesthetics. It did not matter what something looked like as long as it worked. Jerry loved entertaining family and friends with his story telling. He had the perfect touch for embellishing them just enough to keep the listener's attention in suspense to the very end. One of his most favorite pastimes was his delight in surprising folks with the many baked goods he would make and share around. He dearly loved cats and would be most happy and content when either Sadie or Thomas was purring in his lap. Jerry lived his life based on his strong faith and exceptional Bible knowledge. He was loved by family and friends and will be missed by all who knew or encountered him. He is survived by his wife, Martha B. Harris; his son, Douglas E. Harris and his wife, Sharon; three granddaughters: Pamela H. Brown, Gayle F. Harris and Deanna J. Harris as well as a brother, John E. Harris. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Parish Church, PO Box 125 Johns Island, SC 29457, the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, PO Box 21833 Charleston, SC 29413 or to Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412. I loved Jerry's stories, both told and written. He really had a talent for that. The obituary is correct. Jerry could keep you on the edge of your seat right to the end. He brought happiness and laughter to many. We will miss him greatly.

Doug: your dad was a wonderful friend and used to be neighbor. I fondly remember our camping trips, gardening endeavors and good belly laughs with him. My mom and dad thought the world of him, too... I am so sorry to hear of his passing. hugs and prayers being sent your way.
