Jerry Coker Obituary

Jerry Gordon Coker MT. PLEASANT - Jerry Gordon Coker of Mt. Pleasant, age 73, died Feb. 11, 2011. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Joubert Coker, their son Scott Kendall Coker and his wife Annette of Atlanta, GA, two grandsons, Chad and Kendall, two step-grandsons, Ivan and Oliver, his brother Bruce A. Coker and wife Susan of Lilburn, GA, his brother William Farrel Coker of Jacksonville, FL, his sister-in-law Grace Young of Mt. Pleasant, and several nieces and nephews. Jerry was born August 19, 1937, in Long Beach, CA, but resided in his home town of Jacksonville for many years. He was an Air Force veteran, a graduate of the University of Florida, and a devoted Gator fan. In 1980 he moved to Atlanta, GA, to take a position as an electrical engineer with the Georgia Power Company. Upon retirement he and Carolyn moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC, where they were members of Christ Episcopal Church and Jerry sang in the choir. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved boating, skiing, and fishing. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and a joyful person who never met a stranger. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. He is now brightening up the streets of Heaven, reunited with his sister Janice Coker Sazama, and sitting at the feet of his Lord Jesus Christ with all the saints. The relatives invite you to a memorial service at Christ Episcopal Church, 2304 Highway 17 North in Mt. Pleasant. The service will be at 11:00 a.m., on February 15, 2011, with a reception to follow. Internment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Georgetown, SC. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund. Funeral arrangements are provided by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, 11 CUNNINGTON AVENUE, CHARLESTON, SC 29405. Visit our guestbook at www.postandcourier.com/ deaths

A Note to Jerry:

I used to call you “Shay” before I could really talk….I don’t know why? I followed you everywhere when I learned to walk. You help me to conquer my tricycle and other difficult tasks. You tolerated me slowing down your playtime. You protected me from the street bullies, when they threaten to take away my cardboard snow sled. You were always there for me as my big brother….I thank you for that.
I followed your lead in joining the U.S. Air Force and riding motorcycles. Us brothers three, all Univ.of Fla. BSEEs....how about that?
I remember some happy times. Scuba diving off the Florida Keys; flounder gigging and fishing in Florida; lots of UF Gator games, snow skiing trips to North Carolina; vacationing together in Europe; and many, many happy family gatherings.
I remember the sad times. We grieved together our Father’s tragic death in 1957, the passing of our dear sister, Janice, in 1979 and Mom’s agonizing battle with Alzheimers then death in 1993.
I promise to help look after Carolyn and Scott & family. I will miss you dearly, big brother, but I know you’re with Dad, Mom, and Janice now, and you, at last, feel no mental pain. Till we meet again in heaven………
Your loving brother,
Bruce
