Jerrold Watson Obituary

WATSON, SR., Jerrold MONETTA - Services for Jerrold A. Watson, Sr., 84, of Monetta, South Carolina, died at his home Friday morning, February 17, 2006. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 19, 2006, 3:00 p.m., at the Batesburg-Leesville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Torrey officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Spring Cemetery. Visitation will be at his home 3809 Highway 23, Monetta, SC from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2006. Barr-Price Funeral Home, Historic B-L Chapel is assisting the family. Mr. Watson was born in the home where he passed away in Monetta to the late Joseph Henry Watson, Sr. and Mary Frontis Watson. He was married for 59 years to Mary Elizabeth (Tiz) Shealy Watson. He was a peach and vegetable grower for 60 years, served on the S.C. Governor's Agriculture Advisory Council, and the S.C. Farm Bureau Fruit Commodity Board. He was President of the South Carolina Peach Council, President of the National Peach Council, a Trustee and Deacon of the Batesburg-Leesville Presbyterian Church, and Charter Member of Tri-County Associates. He also served as President of the Ponderosa Country Club, on the Board of Trustees of Federal Land Bank and Nation's Bank, a member of the Batesburg-Leesville Moose Club and the Batesburg-Leesville Lion's Club. He was also a Charter Member of the Ridge Flyway Ducks Unlimited Chapter and a Clemson University IPTAY Member for 52 years. Mr. Watson graduated from Furman University in 1943 where he was a member and President of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a World War II Veteran of the Naval Air Corp-Pacific Theater where he flew on a PBM Aircraft stationed in the Pacific on the USS Pine Island.Mr. Watson received the prestigious Mr. Peach Award in 1997 and the National Outstanding Peach Grower Award in 1996 for his contributions to the peach industry. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Batesburg-Leesville Presbyterian Church, 103 Mitchell St., B-L, SC 29006 or to the Clemson Univ. Foundation, Musser Farms Peach Fund, 110 Daniel Dr., Clemson, SC 29634. In addition to his wife surviving are children, Cynthia (Bill) Watson Britt of Monks Corner, Pamela Watson of Monetta, Jerrold (Catherine Whitham) Arthur Watson, Jr. and Joseph (Tonya Kneece) Henry Watson, II both of Monetta; grandchildren, Elizabeth Shirer Britt, Pamela Clair Britt, Joseph Henry Watson, III, Dalton Reid Watson, Jerrold Arthur Watson, III, Rebecca Elizabeth Watson.
