Jerome Riols Obituary

Jerome Riols RIDGEVILLE, SC - Jerome C. Riols passed away at his home in Ridgeville, SC, on March 2nd, 2023. He was born in Charleston on April 15, 1946, the son of Robert and Eleanor Riols and is survived by his sisters, Yvonne Riols Caraviello (Charlie) and Mary Florence Ganis (Roger). Jerome is also survived by Lisa Gossett, his partner in life and better half of over 30 years. In addition to his parents, Jerome was also predeceased by his sister, Andrea Riols Crite and brother, Robert Riols. As a young boy, Jerome attended Cathedral Grammar school and spent his days playing sports and making lifelong friends with kids from the projects as well as those from south of Broad. He left them all laughing. He graduated from Bishop England High School where he majored in flirting with girls and attempting to get a laugh out of the nuns without getting a demerit. Jerome was also a proud member of the 1963 BEHS State Championship Basketball team. After graduating in 1964, he enrolled at the Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University) and graduated in 1968. He was known to say that he "matriculated at BCLA .... Baptist College at Ladson Approximately". Jerome was the owner of "Breakers", a popular Market street eatery and nightspot frequented by Charleston's after hours "night people". He was also managing partner of Charleston Seafood on James Island. Jerome also served his country as a member of the Army National Guard, was a member of the Ark Lounge, and a member in good standing of the Hampton Park Playground Alumni Association. Jerome enjoyed traveling, especially his trips with friends to Costa Rica. For the past few years, Jerome has been fighting Leukemia and more recently memory issues but he never lost his sense of humor. He had a list of 15 to 20 people who he called weekly to tell jokes (sometimes more than once) and to catch up with friends and families. He leaves a large group of older Charlestonians to mourn his loss with a smile. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

I must say that I enjoyed all the good times on Logan Street with Yvonne and Jerome especially them trying to teach me to shag -- they were the best. Jerome always had a smile for you and always made the best out of everyday. I know he is already entertaining those he loves in heaven with his smile. Rest in peace and my sincere prayers and thoughts to all his family - I know they will miss his sweet ways. Rosie White Ryan

As a came here not a been here, I have been befriended by lots of old Charlestonians, Jerome Riols being one of them. I sure will miss my old Ark Lounge friend and visitor at Buddy's home on the creek. So long old friend, one more smooth stepping Charleston shagger has gone on to the great dance floor in the sky. You will be missed

My childhood memories are filled with love and laughter, especially the raucous noise and fun when the Riols family visited. Aunt Eleanor, Mary Florence and Jerome, in particular, had a gift for tickling "Uncle Buddy's" funny bone. Jerome always took time to talk to me, the much younger cousin, and I remember his kindness and big heart with great love.

I luckily was one of Jeromes' friends he called to tell jokes to. What a hero! I'll miss him and his jokes. Sondra and Lenny

Will miss a dear friend. Always remember his smiling face. One of my favorite people in the BEHS class of 1964.

Gonna miss you Uncle Romie! Thank you for the memories you left behind, especially those crisp $100 bills you would give all the nieces and nephews for Christmas! Fond memories of Easter at Camp Cottageville also. You were so loving and accepting of all. You always wore the coolest outfits too. I can't say enough, enjoy being reunited in heaven with all the family and friends that went before you.
Much love
