Michael Kalua Obituary

Michael Archer Kalua Michael Archer Kalua, age 62, of Fayetteville, N.C., passed away Thursday, July 1.

He served 20 years in the U.S. Army as a communications sergeant in Special Forces and Special Operations units. During his career, he completed tours in Vietnam, Panama, was an original communications specialist of Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta, and communications specialist for the Intelligence Support Activity. He participated in many operational and humanitarian missions around the world. Most notably, he was a team member in the Iranian Hostage Rescue Mission in 1980. As a civilian, he worked for the State Department, Robin Sage exercises, and most recently as an 18E instructor in Special Forces Qualifications Course. As KZ5MK, WA4YRD and N4LJR, he enjoyed amateur radio and participated in many annual Field Day exercises.

Mike was born to Issac K. and Elizabeth N. Kuhia Kalua, on December 28, 1947, in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. He was raised from infancy to his teens by by his paternal aunt and uncle, Nancy K. and Henry Paia. He is survived by his wife, Margie Williams Kalua of Fayetteville; daughters, Kaleiokalani Diehl (Eric) of Manassas, Virginia; Malia Allen (Robert) of Fayetteville; son, Michael Kalua, Jr. (Elizabeth) of Fayetteville; a brother, Dennison Kalua of Kaneohe, Hawaii; sisters, Jacqueline Keliihoomalu of Hauula, Hawaii; Nania Welch of Waimanalo, Hawaii; Jocelyn Frye (Bill) of Kaneohe, Hawaii and Nancy Kamanu of Kaneohe, Hawaii and Esther Watson of Waianae, Hawaii; six grandchildren, Lilia and Ke'alohi Diehl; Molly and Emily Kalua; and Kainoa and P.K. Allen. In addition to his parents and aunt and uncle, he was preceded in death by brothers, Isaac Kalua, Jr., and Patrick Kalua; sisters Carnation Colleado; Macine Kalihi; and Sweetheart Harris.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at JFK Memorial Chapel on Ft. Bragg at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010, with military honors. Ashes will remain with the family to be scattered at a later date.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs Kalua and her extended family. I only knew Mr Kaula for a short period of time, but he will never be forgotten. He was a great person and a great coach (volleyball).
