Jeannette Johnson Obituary

Jeannette Smith Johnson PINE BLUFF, AR - Jeannette Smith Johnson, 81, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas died Tuesday, February 2, 2010. The longtime South Carolina and Alabama resident was born in Ridgeland, SC on December 17, 1928, a daughter of Fred Wilson and Ethel Jones Smith. She was reared and received her early education in Grays, SC, graduating from high school there. After attending business school in Charleston, SC, she worked in the commandant's office at The Citadel. She married Walter Edwin Johnson in Charleston in May of 1956. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Huntsville, AL, in 1966. After her children were older, she worked in the Foundation office at Huntsville Hospital, retiring in 1982. Jeannette and her husband were avid tennis players, traveled together, and volunteered at Huntsville Hospital before Mr. Johnson's death in 2000. Mrs. Johnson moved to Bluffton, SC, in 2002 to be near her family there. She moved to Pine Bluff in 2007 where she spent a great deal of time with her Arkansas family. Affectionately known and referred to as "JJ", Jeannette found great joy in spending time with family, friends and especially her grandchildren. Her love for life could be seen through her bright smile, loving spirit, and unfailing positive attitude. And while family and loved ones mourn her loss, they celebrate her life and the lasting memories she left with all. Her survivors include two sons, Walter Johnson (Marti) of White Hall, AR and Larry Johnson (Donna) of Huntsville, AL; two brothers, Jep Smith and Rufus W. "Dick" Smith of Grays, SC; one sister, Ina Smith of Grays; and four grandchildren, Sarah Katherine Johnson, William T. Johnson, Les Johnson, and Lawren Johnson. Services are Friday, February 12, 11:00 a.m., at graveside in Bethany Cemetery in Charleston by J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Directors. The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to First United Methodist Church designated for a Habitat for Humanity house, Box 8003, Pine Bluff, AR 71611, or to CASA, Box 6705, Pine Bluff, AR 71611.
