Jean Still Obituary

Jean Mash Still Charleston - On Sunday, May 16, 2021, Jean Mash Still, 85, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family and entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jean is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Dalton Dewey Still; her daughter, Brenda Still Sanders; son-in-law, T.O. Sanders; and beloved granddaughters, Ella Jean Sanders and Elise Claire Sanders. Jean was preceded in death by a toddler daughter, Tania Leigh Still, and her parents, W. Aulman Mash and Velma Harrison Mash. A native of Greenville, AL, Jean graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, AL, with a major in Religious Education and a minor in Secretarial Science. She was a student in football coach Bobby Bowden's PE class. Jean and Dalton met in a singles group at First Baptist Church of Montgomery, AL, where Jean served as financial secretary. After Jean cornered Dalton and quizzed him about his upbringing, education and work, she gave her approval and the love bug bit. At the time, Dalton was an executive for AAFES at nearby Maxwell Air Force Base. For the remainder of Dalton's career, the couple and their family moved around every three years enjoying a variety of posts both in the US and overseas. Their posts included Montgomery, AL (where they still maintain friendships from the singles group), Tucson, Vandenburg, West Point, San Francisco, Dallas, Panama and Guam. At each post, Jean found meaningful work. Sometimes this was as a homemaker, sometimes working as a bookkeeper, as she saw fit. The family became very adept at moving and adapting to new places. They were very good at working together as a unit. They enjoyed traveling at each of their posts, especially traveling throughout Central and South America, Southeast Asia and Australia. In 1996, the couple retired to Crowfield in Goose Creek (to be in the same time zone as daughter Brenda), where they lived for 25 years. They were active members of Crowfield Baptist Church. For the last year and a half, the couple has lived with daughter, Brenda and her family in West Ashley, enjoying the wildlife and the canopy of live oaks along the Wappoo Creek marsh. Jean's passions were living life with husband, Dalton, gardening (she loved flowers), enjoying the cool mountain air at her Franklin, NC, retreat, keeping up with two teenage granddaughters, watching college football (Auburn and Clemson), giving an evening bone to grand dog, Genevieve, and teasing/poking her son-in-law whom she liked to keep straight. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Dalton D. Still are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 20, 2021, at Crowfield Baptist Church. Pastor David Coleman will officiate. Burial will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Rd., Charleston. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Wednesday afternoon at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Hwy., Charleston. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Because Jean considered flowers to be for the living, condolences may be made by sending flowers to someone in your life you think might enjoy receiving them. Also, memorials may be made to the Lowcountry Food Bank (www.lowcountryfoodbank.org), and to Samaritan's Purse (www.samaritanspurse.org), which were Jean's favorite charitable organizations. I’m so very sorry about Jean. I had no idea that she passed away already. I would have been there for her along with my son. My heart is broken that I wasn’t there. Please forgive me. She will be in my heart forever.

I still remember what a gracious, welcoming host was when she hosted a party for Brenda in their lovely home in Crowfield. She made everyone feel welcomed. Our loss is heaven's gain.
