Jean Pope Obituary

Jean Wilson Lide Pope HANAHAN - Entered into eternal rest on February 25, 2012 Jean Wilson Lide Pope widow of Harold H. Pope. She was born in Charleston on August 14, 1919, a daughter of Arthur Forrester Lide and Sarah Dove Venning Lide. She was a graduate of Memminger High (all girls school) in Charleston where she excelled in English and Literature and attended the New Orleans School of Ballet. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion. She was also a member of the Rebecca Motte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she once served as a Board member and Corresponding Secretary, The National Society of the Magna Charta Dames and Barons, The Gibbs Art Gallery, First Families of South Carolina, First Families of Virginia, First Families of Pennsylvania, the Charleston Library Society and was a former Sunday School teacher at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church which later came to be called St. Thomas. She was a former proof reader with the Charleston paper, a long time American Red Cross Nurse serving at the Charleston Naval Hospital, and secretary in the early 1960's at the Yeamans Hall Country Club in Hanahan. Mrs. Pope moved to Hanahan in 1961 from Charleston when her husband moved up to the Polaris Missile Facility Atlantic. After moving to Hanahan, she worked for a time at the Yeamans Hall Club. While there, she met Alice Roosevelt Longworth who asked her to transcribe notes for her biography. Once as a child, she met the aviator Charles Lindbergh during a parade in New Orleans honoring him. She loved gardening, reading, volunteer work, the Young at Heart Episcopal Church group, and was an avid Bridge player and a former member of several Charleston Bridge clubs. She was a lifelong supporter of the arts in Charleston where she was often found every spring volunteering at sidewalk art shows on Church Street and at her sister's classes at the Gibbes. She loved history particularly South Carolina history and lineage research, and her ancestors were founders or contributing founders of towns, churches and colleges throughout South Carolina including Cheraw, Society Hill, Welch Neck, Darlington, Dovesville, Mt. Pleasant, Walterboro, Coker College, St. David's Church and Christ Church Parrish. She is survived by two daughters, Sarah P. Brodie (Michael) of Hanahan and Jean P. Eiserman of Charleston, one son Harold Haskell Hamlin of Charleston and five grandchildren, Holly (Ben), Michael, Tradd, Adam, and Lilly. She was predeceased by her husband, one son, Gary Lucas Hamlin and a sister Sarah "Sally" Lide Aimar. Relatives and Friends are invited to attend a Requiem Mass on Wednesday, February 29 at 11:00 am, at the Episcopal Church Of The Holy Communion. Interment to follow at 2:00 pm at Beaufort National Cemetery 1601 Boundary Street Beaufort, South Carolina.
