Jean Cooper Obituary

Jean Powell Cooper LADSON - Jean Powell Cooper, 66, of Ladson, passed away on Monday, January 24, 2022 at home surrounded by her family. Her memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Faith Assembly of God with Pastor LaVaughn Young officiating. A celebration of life will follow at Happy Hours Bar and Grill. Jean was born in Rock Hill, SC to Bessie W. Meadows and Charles T. Powell, Jr. on October 28, 1955. She was married to Steve W. Cooper on May 1, 1992 in a small ceremony officiated by her uncle, LaVaughn Young. Jean and Steve shared a life for 35 years and raised 4 children together. Although Steve and Jean shared a loving marriage spanning over 3 decades, her one true love was her Clemson Tigers. She graduated from Goose Creek High School in 1973, where she met Debbie Jolly, her best friend of 50 years. She worked as a Deputy Coroner for the Charleston County Coroner's Office for 15 years. In addition, Jean spent her time working side by side with her father, helping to run Summerville Speedway. Anybody who knew Charlie Powell would agree that he was not the easiest person to work with, but Jean could handle anything or anybody with ease. Despite how tiny she was, only reaching 5 ft. 2 in. and weighing a paltry 110 pounds, Jean was fearless and behaved as though she was over 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. There was not a fight Jean was afraid of, including her ongoing battle with COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and the battery of other illnesses she faced. Jean loved camping at the lake, and her favorite time of year was Christmas. She was never happier than when she was surrounded by her family, and her grandchildren and great-grandson were her life. Jean is preceded in death by her brother, Steve Meadows and her father, Charles Powell, Jr. Jean is survived by her husband, Steve W. Cooper, her daughters, Christy Leggette (Kathy) and Michele Bahm, her sons, Steven Cooper (Savanna) and Sean Cooper, her sisters, Deborah McNeal, Denise Black (Gary), Patricia Greene, and Lisa Powell-Berenyi (Gary), her brothers, Charles Powell III (Wendy), Robert Powell, Dennis Meadows (Kim), Sean Graham (Tracey), her mother, Bessie W. Meadows, her grandchildren, Haleigh Leggette (John), Blair Bahm, Tes Cooper, Savannah Greevey, Ashton Bahm, Olivia Cooper, Caroline Cooper, Alana Cooper, Samantha Cooper, and Thomas Cooper, and her great-grandson, Carter Doggett. Jean was a bright spot in the coroner“s office, bringing her wry sense of "been there, done that" with her and combining it with the care and compassion of her office. She was a giant amongs the other height-challenged women with whom she worked, and made my job easier when she could.
Rest well.
