Jean Boggs Obituary

Jean Boggs Charleston - Jean Fraser Boggs, 104, widow of William Lewis Boggs, Ret. Col. US Army, passed away July 10, 2021. Born in Florence, SC, she was the daughter of Catherine Jervey Fraser and Clarence Anderson Fraser. Her first husband, Alfred J. Folger, survived the Invasion of Normandy, and was lost in action on D-Day plus three. Jean attended Furman University in Greenville. While raising six children she was also involved in Garden and Bridge Clubs. She was an energetic volunteer at the polls during elections and in local hospitals. From learning guitar in her 80's to line dancing to swimming, she embraced life and had many varied interests. Her sense of humor was often displayed by wearing outrageous costume jewelry. She had a happy, positive personality that brightened many lives. A longtime active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, and later St. Anthony's Parish, she became a member at Christ Our King upon moving to Mt. Pleasant. Jean is survived by her children, Taylor Folger Smith of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Alfred Folger (Mary), of Columbia, SC, Ellen Boggs McClure (Keith), of Alexandria, VA, Bruce Boggs (June), of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Lee Payne of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and William Boggs, Jr. (Jill) of Murrell's Inlet, SC.; her grandchildren, Mary Fraser Royall (Lee) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Patrick McClure of Charlottesville, VA, Andy McClure (Julie) of Charlottesville, VA, Samuel McClure (Ashley) of Grant, AL, Mary Taylor McClure of Charlottesville, VA, Catherine Boggs of Merion Station, PA, Sarah Boggs Anderson (Thomas) of Atlanta, GA, and Elizabeth Boggs (Tyler Manley) of Denver, CO; and her great-grandchildren, Will, Dupre, and Mims Royall, Fraser and Eli McClure, James and Norah King, Boone, Charlotte, and Jack Anderson; as well as nieces and nephews, Frank League of Sunset Beach, NC, Joe Walsh of Mandarin, FL, Cathy Henderson of Mt. Dora, FL, and Jeanne Coleman of Naples, FL. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at Christ Our King in Mt. Pleasant at 10:00 am. The Rite of Committal will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Roper St. Francis Hospital Foundation; 125 Doughty Street, Suite 790, Charleston, SC 29403 or your local chapter of The American Red Cross. I just heard about Jean. I used to love her coming down for breakfast and to my desk at Sweetgrass...she had a wonderful smile, and quite the dancer..

Dear Taylor,
I'm so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was such a joy to talk to and to see at St. Anthony's! I often told my children, "When I grow up, I want to be like Jean Boggs!" She always had a smile on her face...like she was up to something! During an "ask Fr. Pat homily", he was explaining the knots on his rope belt..."No money, No honey, Do as you're told". He went on to tell about how he chose to follow his vocation and the sacrifice of leaving his girlfriend. At the conclusion of his story, your mom raised her hand and asked, "What happened to your honey?" I can't recall his answer, but haven't forgotten your mom's question.
She lived a good, full life and has left quite a legacy thru her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed physically, but will live on in our hearts and memory.
Take care of yourself, Taylor! Please know my prayers are with all the family.
With Much Love, Ann

Jean was our neighbor in Overbrook until we had to relocate because of John´s job. During our ten years on Overbrook Circle, Jean was like another grandmother to our son, also named John. Jean encouraged John to join a swim team, which forever changed his life. When we moved to Indianapolis, John joined his middle school swim team and then swam for his high school. Those friends with whom he swam continue to be great friends. Our family loved Jean! She was a great lady! Our thoughts and prayers will be with Taylor, Mary Fraser, and the rest of this wonderful family.

To Taylor and Family: I send my deepest sympathy to all of you in this loss. I appreciated and loved Jean. She was an extension of the League family, and came to several of the dinners I hosted for them. Jean was most exceptional, and she always brightened my day. Eleanor and Jean Fraser have been wonderful gifts to those of us in the League family. You will remain close in my thoughts as you go through these days.D

I knew Jean Boggs only through her wonderful daughter, Taylor Smith. We had the privilege of working together at Buena Vista Elementary School, and I know Mrs. Boggs was a fantastic lady because her daughter is a fantastic lady. Taylor talked about her mother often, and always in glowing terms. May the peace of Christ and the comfort of the Holy Spirit be with you and your family.
