Mrs. Janie Lee McMakin Hood, 93, of St. Stephen, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, surrounded by the love of her children. A devoted mother, grandmother, and community servant, Mrs. Hood lived a life marked by grace, resilience, and quiet strength. Born in Berkeley County to Joseph Wheeler McMakin and Alma Keller McMakin, Mrs. Hood was deeply rooted in the values of faith, family, and service. She dedicated many years as the town clerk for St. Stephen, where her warmth and diligence left a lasting impression on all who knew her. A proud member of Russellville Christian Church, her faith was a guiding light throughout her life. Mrs. Hood found joy in the simple pleasures-sewing with care, tending to her vegetable garden, and basking in the beauty of the outdoors. But above all, her heart belonged to her family. She was the beloved widow of Gadson Hood, and together they built a legacy of love that continues to flourish through generations. She is survived by her children: Cynthia H. Russell (John) of Russellville, Sheryl H. Shillinglaw (Tracy) of St. Stephen, and Jeffrey G. Hood of St. Stephen; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one more great-grandchild on the way-a testament to the enduring roots she planted. A celebration of Mrs. Hood's life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at the Chapel of Dial-Murray Funeral Home in Moncks Corner. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in St. Stephen. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 PM. Her legacy is stitched into the fabric of her family and community-a life well-lived, and a soul deeply cherished.
