Janet Woodard Obituary

Janet Marilyn Huxford Woodard Charleston - Janet Marilyn Huxford Woodard, 84, of Charleston, SC, widow of Carlton Tabor Woodard, returned home to her Heavenly Father Friday, August 21, 2015. Janet was born June 26, 1931 in Charleston, SC, daughter of the late Harry Russell Huxford and the late Florrie "Florence" Jones Huxford. As a native Charlestonian she graduated from Murray Vocational School. She loved roller skating and met her husband, Carlton, in the old Folly Beach skating rink. Their life together focused on raising four children and working to create C & J Enterprises. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She held many positions and served faithfully. During this time she developed her passion for family history. Janet was instrumental in building the family history library that resides in the church today here in the Charleston area. She taught family history extensively and was asked to be a guest speaker at many genealogy conferences. Her specialty in research was Horry County where she published an "1850 Census for Horry County". Janet was a member of the South Carolina Historical Society and the Charleston Chapter and Pee Dee Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society to name a few. She loved Charleston's history and was known as a great historian; often, leading tours of important Historical landmarks to many of the visiting dignitaries of her church. Those left to cherish her memories are two sons: Mark D. Woodard (Vickie) of Glendale, AZ and Raymond J. Woodard of Charleston, SC; sister Florence Kurtz (Jack) of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren: Lara Yerges, Karl Woodard (Kasey), Janette Yerges, Kristin Fellows (John), Kari Hardy (Garrett) and Kimberly Mullenaux (HL); and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Carlton Terry Woodard and a daughter, Paula Marie Yerges. Her funeral service will be held Saturday, August 29, 2015, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1519 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Pkwy., from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
