Jane Steele Obituary

Jane Stevens Steele SUMMERVILLE - Jane Stevens Steele passed away on July 18, 2016 after a 20-year struggle with Alzheimers disease. Known to her family as Tiny, and to later adult friends as Scottie, she was a loving and devoted wife and mother, but more than that she was an angel and friend to all who knew her kindness, intelligence, humor, and industriousness. The daughter of Elbert C. and Jean M. Stevens, she was born on January 21, 1922 in a horse-drawn carriage in a snowstorm in Istanbul Turkey. With her brother John H. Stevens and sister Dorothy Stevens McClave, she spent her teen and young adult years in the Panama Canal Zone, which is where she met and fell in love with the dashing Army lieutenant who became her beloved husband, John C. H. ("Jack") Steele, Sr. She graduated from the Canal Zone Jr College and attended Northwestern University and Shorter College (Georgia). After the war Jane and Jack settled in North Augusta, where she was (much more than!) a housewife and mother to a daughter, Erroll H. Steele, and two sons, John C. H. Steele Jr, and Peter W. Steele. She worked outside the home as medical secretary and Girl Friday to an Augusta surgeon. She was an active member of North Augusta's St Bartholemew's Episcopal Church and later, after she and Jack retired to his hometown of Charleston, of St Phillip's Episcopal Church. In retirement she was the chief editor, typist, and cheerleader in Jack's efforts publishing books on family history and on Charleston, and she enjoyed exploring and celebrating their joint Scottish roots via trips to Scotland and attendance at Highland Games in the US. She is survived by her sons, their wives Kathy B. Steele and Ann L. Steele, and her grandchildren, Katherine E. ("Katie") Steele, Sarah E. Steele, and Benjamin D. Steele. A private interment will be held at St Paul's Church graveyard in Summerville. A memorial service will be held at Circular Congregational Church in Charleston on a date in August to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. A memorial message may be written to the family by visiting our website at www.jamesadyal.com. Mr.Jay and Miss Jane Steele were neighbors and members of my church in North Augusta. Later I noticed them at a family party and realized we were related through the Hays. Dynamic, fine people. Sorry for your loss.

Ann and Peter,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your extended family at this time of Jane's passing. She is now with Jack for eternity. I still remember them lovingly holding hands as they walked to church every Sunday. They were a precious couple.
