James Tupper Obituary

TUPPER, James COLUMBIA - Funeral service for James Lockwood Tupper, AIA, 83, will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Martin's in the Fields Episcopal Church with burial in St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Summerville. The Reverend Michael A. Bullock and The Reverend Michael Lumpkin will officiate. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge. Mr. Tupper died Monday, April 18, 2005 at the Rice Home. He was born March 21, 1922, in Summerville. He was the son of the late Elias Doar Tupper, M.D. and Regina Allison Lockwood Tupper. He was a charter member of St. Martin's in the Fields Episcopal Church having served on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden. He designed St. Martin's and was a consultant with the Willet Glass Company for the stained glass windows. He was very active in community and the Episcopal Diocese. He was the coordinator for Faith Alive for South Carolina and North Carolina for fifteen years and was active in Faith at Work . He was a past member of Columbia Sertoma Club, the Columbia Ball and the Summit Club. Mr. Tupper was a member of the American Institute of Architects having worked with Lafaye, Fair, Lafaye for thirty-five years and the State Department of Education, Office of School Planning and Building. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II. He was a graduate with honors of Clemson University in 1943. Surviving are his wife, Frances Dill Mikell Tupper; son and daughter-in-law, James Lockwood Tupper, Jr. and Carolyn Shuford Tupper; three grandsons, Park Mikell Tupper, Lee Lockwood Tupper and Joel Ashford Tupper; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Frances Dill Tupper of Charleston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Foundation, 5220 Clemson Avenue, Columbia, S.C. 29206 or to the Alzheimer's S.C. Chapter, P.O. 7044, Columbia, S.C. 29202.
