James Svendsen Obituary

James Victor Svendsen James Island - James Victor Svendsen "Vic", 69, of James Island, entered eternal rest on Monday, August 23, 2021, peacefully at home. Vic was born in Charleston, SC on August 30, 1951, son of the late Hal and Ethel Svendsen. A lifelong Charleston man, he attended Blessed Sacrament and James Island High School. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from the University of South Carolina and had a successful career in the food sales industry, spending most of it with US Foods. The things he enjoyed most in life were excavating bottles from old privies in downtown Charleston, fishing, shrimping, boating and Gamecock Football. Anyone visiting his home for the first time would be given a tour of his bottle collection and probably also given an old bottle to keep. He loved his family, friends and grandchildren fiercely. He attended every birthday party, ballet performance and play, no matter the distance! He was loved by so many and always a giver, doing anything to help a friend in need. His kind heart will be remembered always! Vic is survived by his two daughters, Andrea Hoelscher (Sean) of Myrtle Beach and Lindsay Bonam (Dave) of James Island; four grandchildren, Ava 9, Dexter 8, Claire 7 and Hadley 6 as well as his brother, Virgil Svendsen (Barbara) of James Island. A private graveside service will take place at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. You are cordorially invited to attend a reception to Celebrate his Life between 2:00 and 5:00 PM, Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at the James Island Yacht Club, 734 Wampler Dr., Charleston, SC 29412. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vic's memory to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston, 81 Gadsden St, Charleston, SC 29401 (rmhcharleston.org). Arrangements by James A. McAlister, Inc. (843) 766-1365. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Vic was a grand person whose knowledge of Charleston bottles, especially 19th century sodas, was exceptional. We knew each other when we met at bottle shows and by telephone whenever I needed information on certain antique bottles. He will be missed. Bill Baab, Augusta, Georgia.

A kind, sweet cousin, who I'm going to miss terribly. Always a smile on his face and a good word for everybody. Not many of his kind left. Farewell, my friend.............

So sorry to hear about Victor's passing! I hadn't seen him in a few years, but we would run into each other occasionally and catch up, but it's been awhile. Victor was a great guy, always in good humor, he and my brother Bobby spent time hunting for bottles many years ago, they were a little closer in age, but Victor was a everyone's friend. May the road rise to meet you my friend, Rest in Peace....my best to the family.

I met Vic a handful of times. But, I knew what kind of man he was.He helped me in my time of need, was open hearted and kind. I liked him from our first meeting. And he was interesting. A man of adventure. Holding to his own values. I would have liked to have known him better.

Karl and I will miss Vic, "The Old Bottle Man." We were delighted to have him as part of Antiques & Artisans Village and to have him as a friend. He helped us tremendously and willingly -- unless the Gamecocks were playing, of course. Our lives are better for having known him. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

Vic was our neighbor in James Island for many years. We had lots of fun times together and even entered a fishing tournament at the Yacht club. Everyone that met him loved his sense of humor and big smiles. He also gave us lots of bottles I still carry from every place we lived. He will be greatly missed. I had the pleasure of meeting Vic while being a vendor at Antiques & Artisans & we immediately bonded over our shared love of the Gamecocks. When Vic found out I lived in an old house in Summerville, he asked if he & some friends could come dig in my backyard. Of course I said yes & enjoyed watching them having so much fun in the hunt. So sad that Vic has left us, but I know he is cheering on our Gamecocks from Heaven & getting reaquainted with loved ones who got there before him. RIP, Vic.
