James Simmons Obituary

James Simmons Bonneau, SC - James Henry Simmons, 81, of Macedonia, a former Nuclear Supervisor at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and Charleston businessman, died Tuesday evening in a North Charleston Hospital. His funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday morning in the Macedonia Christian Church. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens at 3:00 PM, directed by Dial-Murray Funeral Home, Moncks Corner. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday evening. Mr. Simmons was born February 15, 1941 in San Diego, CA, a son of the late Jackson Frost Simmons and Elizabeth Dennis Simmons of Blue Springs, Alabama and Charleston, SC. He was a member of the Macedonia Christian Church and former member of Portside Baptist Church. In his younger years, Mr. Simmons loved baseball and was very good at it, making it to several championships. After retiring from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, he founded and operated Howell & Simmons Construction and Paving Company, Inc in June of 1986. Mr. Simmons was a very avid hunter and fisherman. His love for hunting, especially dog hunting, was very important to him and played a large role in his life. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Mr. Simmons was the widower of Mrs. Linda Miles Simmons after a 28 year marriage that included 3 children. Surviving are his wife of nearly 26 years, Barbara Walters Simmons; a daughter, Brenda S. Torrance (Richard), of Charlotte, a step-daughter, Cindy Ballentine (Renne) of Campobello,; three sons, James William "Billy" Simmons, of Yulee, Fl., James H. "Bubba" Simmons, II, (Whitney) of Sullivan's Island, and Jackson F. "Buck" Simmons, II, (Melissa) of Moncks Corner; 13 grandchildren, Ashley, Sara, Jimmy, Katie, Paige, Trey, Hayden, River, Reef, Maggie, Elizabeth, Johnny, and Morgan; and eight great-grandchildren.
