James Sams Obituary

James Gregorie Sams, Jr. COLUMBIA, SC - Memorial services for Maj. James Gregorie Sams, Jr. (US Army Ret.), 79, of Columbia, will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 4, 2009, in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m., until the hour of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Inurnment services with Full Military Honors will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 5, 2009, at Old St. Andrews Church Cemetery, 2604 Ashley River Rd. Charleston, SC 29414. Mr. Sams passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2009. He was born May 24, 1930 in Adams Run, SC to the late James Gregorie and Ellen King Taylor Sams. Mr. Sams was a 1953 Graduate of Clemson University. He was retired from the US Army after 22 years of dedicated service to his country, and later served 20 years as Chief Supervisor of School Food Services for the SC Department of Education before his retirement. A resident of Columbia since 1971, Mr. Sams was a member of the South Carolina Society and St. Cecilia Society of Charleston. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Nancy Storm Sams; sons, James G. Sams III (wife Teresa) of Cary, NC, Gregory S. Sams (wife Gina R.) of Summerville, SC, and David T. Sams (wife Cathy) of Irmo, SC; a daughter, Doris E. Sams of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, Beth, Allison, Taylor, Sarah and Carter; a brother, Franklin T. Sams (wife Carolyn) of Edisto Island, SC and a sister, Joan S. Hodgkiss (husband G. Kingman) of McClellanville, SC.
