I recruited Jim to join Sigma Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi when Jim was a first year law student at USC. He chose me to be his "big brother". The fraternity was blessed to have had his active involvement for so many years. He was a loyal and true friend, and a great fraternity brother. Unfortunately, I didn't see him very often after I moved to DC, That is my regret. I will miss you, Jim. You were an unforgettable friend!!

It is with great sadness that I learned of Jim's passing. Unfailingly kind and thoughtful, he invited me, along with and a couple of other classmates, to his home for a celebratory dinner following the completion of our first year of law school in the late spring of 1979. We marked the occasion with mint juleps on his porch, followed by a fried chicken dinner of Jim's own making. The secret of the first, Jim eagerly volunteered, was honey, not sugar. But when asked to reveal the secret of the other, Jim just smiled wryly. To some, the kindness he showed me then (I was still rather new to Columbia then, and had not yet established many strong friendships) might seem small, but for me it remains an enduring memory of his generous spirit.

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of my law school classmate and SC Court of Appeals co-worker. Jim enriched my life and the lives of most he met. Full of good cheer, bonhomie, and a particular zest for barbecuing. I had not seen Jim for over 10 years, but it is impossible for me to taste barbecue without thinking of Jim's wizardry. Rest in peace Jim.

Having lived across Ivy Lane from the Quinns in my growing-up years, I had great respect for your family and appreciation for what fine neighbors you were to my family. I had the pleasure of baby-sitting for Jim and Elliotte when they were children and in my memory of him Jim will remain a precious, irrepressible little boy with an avid curiosity about the meanings of words who touched my heart by gifting me with drawings he painted on scraps of wood.
My sincere sympathy to Fred and Elliotte and your families and those near and dear to Jim.

I was a law clerk many years ago at the SCDNR and worked with Jim. I remember him as being full of life. I had lost touch with Jim but want to pass along my condolences to his family and close friends. I'm very sad to hear this news. Rest in Peace, Jim.

I am so very saddened to see this. I haven't seen Jim in a very long time and had been meaning to try and contact him. Again , as always, too late. Jim was a very good friend of my brother , Malcolm while in law school. I got to know Jim thru Malcolm and would see him from time to time. I was in law school 2 years ahead of them. Malcolm died in 2000 at only 43 years of age. I'm sure Jim and Malcolm have had way more then one mint julep since being reunited in Heaven. Prayers for his family. Jim was most personable and never met a stranger. Best wishes, John David.

I worked with Jim at the Wildlife Dept for many years until my retirement. We would eat lunch out together and he would tell many of his unique stories. He will be missed and I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and we all share your loss.

Jim saw the absurdity in everyday events and helped us laugh at it all. He was a light in our world, and we were always glad to be in his company. He'll be missed.

My heart goes out to you now and in the days to come. One cannot help but admire a person who shows such care for others. God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7), and he does not forget the love shown, nor the work done for his name (Heb. 6:10).

Jim and I worked together for 20+ years at the Wildlife Department. He was without a doubt. True southern gentleman. He shared some of the funniest stories and poems he had written with me just about everyday. He could always make me laugh. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved dearly and will miss him.

Fred, My most sincere sympathy to you, Elliott and the rest of the family. Overthe years Jim had become not only a brother but indeed a very good frined. I will miss his stories and laughter, his history lessons (even if the details weren't always accurate) his warmth and cameradarie. I am the barbeque pit master I am today because of Jim as are many other brothers he shared his tallents with. He will be greatly missed by us all.

Quinn family: as a friend of Jim's since 1972, I have enjoyed many years swapping stories with this master storyteller. There was no one who could entertain quite like Jim. We enjoyed many Carolina Cup outings together. Am so glad I called him just a few weeks ago to check in with him. He was as positive as I have heard him be in some time. I cannot believe he is gone. Heaven gains a new storyteller, while we mourn the loss of a great friend.

Jim was like a character from one of his own tall tales: funny, bigger than life, kind and one-of-a-kind. He found the funny in almost everything, and shared his humanity with almost everyone.

Mr. Quinn and family,
Jim will be sorely missed by countless people including me. He and I shared many times, many stories, many laughs, and lots of food over the years. He was truly one of the most caring & decent souls I have ever met. Prayers to you all; and Godspeed to Jim.
